Hello, lover of our Amazing Nature!
This time I want to tell you about a very peculiar plant that I grew in my garden and that is known by the name of Mother of Thousands. It was given to me by my best friend's mom, and she told me that it was an uncommon plant and very different from the ones I already had and I agree with her.
Its scientific name is Kalanchoe laetivirens and it is a succulent plant native to Madagascar but widely distributed around the world. It is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and is one of the 125 species that make up the diverse group of Kalanchoe plants.

En esta oportunidad te quiero hablar sobre una planta muy peculiar que cultivé en mi jardín y que es conocida con el nombre de Madre de miles. Me la regaló la mamá de mi mejor amiga, y me dijo que era una planta poco común y muy diferente a las que ya tenía y le doy la razón.
Su nombre científico es Kalanchoe laetivirens y es una planta suculenta nativa de Madagascar pero que está ampliamente distribuida por el mundo. Se usa como planta ornamental en los jardines y es una de las 125 especies que conforma el variado grupo de plantas Kalanchoe.
As you can see in the picture above, this plant has an unusual appearance, due to the small seedlings that grow on the edges of its long leaves (more than 20 centimeters). This characteristic gave rise to the name Mother of Thousands because many new plants are constantly growing on its leaves.
Como puedes observar en la imagen anterior, esta planta tiene un aspecto poco común, debido a las pequeñas plántulas que le crecen en los bordes de sus largas hojas (más de 20 centímetros). Esta característica dio origen al nombre Madre de miles, porque son muchas las nuevas plantas que crecen constantemente en sus hojas.

Succulent plants are those that can maintain, in some of their organs, stored water in greater quantity than a plant without this capacity.
These organs have a large amount of plant tissue that allows them to maintain water reserves for long periods of time, which helps them to resist droughts and arid climates.
Cacti and Aloe vera are some of the best-known examples of this type of plant.
Las plantas suculentas son aquellas que pueden mantener, en alguno de sus órganos, agua almacenada en mayor cantidad que una planta sin esta capacidad.
Estos órganos tienen una gran cantidad de tejido vegetal que les permite mantener reservas de agua por periodos largos de tiempo, lo que les ayuda a resistir sequías y climas áridos.
Los cactus y el Aloe vera son algunos de los ejemplos más conocidos de este tipo de plantas.
My Kalonchoe plant does not require frequent watering, once a week is enough. It is an ideal plant for hot, dry climates and needs to be planted in well-drained soil so that it does not accumulate moisture because excess water rots it.
Mi planta Kalonchoe no requiere de un riego frecuente, una vez a la semana es suficiente. Es una planta ideal para climas cálidos y secos y requiere estar plantada en un suelo con un buen drenaje para que no acumule humedad pues el exceso de agua la pudre.
Its reproduction is natural / Su reproducción es natural
Kalanchoe laetivirens is considered an invasive plant because it reproduces so easily. It does not need our intervention to do so.
The small circles that appear on the serrated edges of the leaves of this plant, will become in seedlings when grow.
La Kalonchoe laetivirens es considerada una planta invasiva por lo fácil que se reproduce. No necesita de nuestra intervención para hacerlo.
En los bordes aserrados de las hojas de esta planta aparecen pequeños círculos que se convertirán en las plántulas al crecer.
As the days go by, the seedlings already have small roots. Then it is shed from the leaves, falls to the ground, and sticks to it to grow.
A medida que pasan los días, las plántulas ya tienen pequeñas raíces. Luego se desprende de las hojas, cae al suelo y se adhiere a él para crecer.
This is why it is not advisable to have this Mother of Thousands plant very close to the others you have in the garden to prevent that them from invading.
Por eso no es recomendable tener esta planta Madre de Miles muy cerca de las otras que tienes en el jardín para evitar que las invadan.
This plant needs sunlight for its development. It can be kept outdoors or indoors, just make sure that the sun's rays do not reach it directly or for many hours.
Esta planta necesita luz solar para su desarrollo. Se puede tener en el exterior o en el interior de la casa, solo debemos asegurarnos que los rayos del sol no le lleguen directamente ni por muchas horas.
Healing properties? / ¿Propiedades curativas?
Researching about Kalanchoe, I found publications stating that some plants of this genus have been used to naturally treat some conditions, such as inflammations, rheumatisms, hypertension, and infections. It is even believed that Kalanchoe has an anti-cancer effect.
Personally, I only use my plant as an ornament in my garden and I do not recommend consuming it if I am not sure of its effects on the body.
However, I found some studies done in recent years in which it is exposed that some chemical compounds have been discovered in 3 types of Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe pinnata, Kalanchoe tubiflora, and Kalanchoe gracilis) that have been able to reduce tumor growth, in experiments conducted in vitro and in live mice with very promising results.
Although it seems to be very good news, so far it has not been demonstrated that this compound is able to stop the growth of tumors in humans, so the anticancer property of this special plant is not yet proven.
Investigando sobre el Kalanchoe, encontré publicaciones que exponían que algunas plantas de este género han sido usadas para tratar naturalmente algunas afecciones, tales como inflamaciones, reumatismos, hipertensión e infecciones. Inclusive, existe la creencia que el Kalanchoe tiene un efecto anticancerígeno.
Particularmente, solo utilizo mi planta como ornamento en mi jardín y no recomiendo que se consumida si no se está seguro de los efectos que pueda provocar en el organismo.
Sin embargo, encontré unos estudios realizados en los últimos años en los cuales se expone que se han descubiertos unos compuestos químicos en 3 tipos de Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe pinnata, Kalanchoe tubiflora y Kalanchoe gracilis) que han sido capaces de disminuir el crecimiento tumoral, en experimentos realizados en vitro y en ratones vivos con resultados muy prometedores.
A pesar de que pareciera una muy buena noticia, hasta ahora no se ha demostrado que este compuesto sea capaz de detener el crecimiento de tumores en seres humanos, Así que la propiedad anticancerigena de esta planta tan especial todavía no está demostrada.
