Last 10 years, I bought a lot of circular needles in different sizes and length according to patterns. I don't want to count how many I have as I may start calculating how much money I spent on them 😂
Now I rarely buy them. It's not only because I have enough needles ... but also I found a way to use a longer one for a knitting object with a shorter circumference length.
For example, a 60cm circular needle for knitting socks or a 80cm circular needle for knitting a hat. That's sounds crazy. But you can do it by keeping the excess part of the circular needle out:
I know it's not a good photo with a black yarn and a circular needle with a black cord ... and not a good lighting condition 😅I wish you can see there are two parts of cord pops out from the sides. I learned this technique from a pattern that shows sock knitting with a circular needle.
If you know this, you can save money and keep your knitting equipments minimal 😉
Happy needle work Monday!
This is an excellent thing to now for knitting but I must add something. I recently used circular needles like this to knit socks, but because the cord was still fairly short, it ended up bending the connection of the cord to the needles a lot, and it broke from the stress. So if you are knitting this way, my tip is to make sure you have an extra long cord on your needles.
Oh no, pity you and the needle ... Thank you for the great tip. I must be careful :)
Perhaps one good thing came out of that I learned knitting so late… I only bought interchangeable needle tips :-DDD
At first I loved having super long cables because I was so afraid to loose stitches, now I prefer shorter once in generell, so that I also often pull out a loop of the too long cable, as I bought more long cables in the beginning instead of the shorter ones I need today. But I fear the problem only comes because I have so many open projects on shorter cables waiting to get knit…
Interchangeable needles are perfect. I wasn't sure I am into knitting that much after 10 years. If I could go back to 10 years ago, I would advice me to invest money on interchangeable needles 😁
I wish I can borrow you some of my needles via Hive ....... Ja but even I have so many needles, I often miss 3-5mm ones as I like yarn of that thickness. That's knitting!
Isn't it strange that some needles sizes are so much more important than others? I also use 3 - 5 mm the most and in crocheting 4 - 5,5 mm. Especially my 4 mm crochet hooks are kind of rebellious, they are always missing. I suspect they have formed a colony somewhere in out flat and live secretly to avoid being used by me 😂
And yes sharing tools would be lovely (I also dream of sharing sewing books with you… perhaps we really need to find a project together which get funded, so that we can visit again)
I was laughing alone at home ... secret colony of needles 😂They might do party in the night time while I'm sleeping. Ja, sewing books exchange would be nice too. We must find something. I ask my partner he knows something about funding. He is good at finding the kind of information 😉
Yes, let's rule the world with art (and funding :-DDD) perhaps we could make a animation film about our needles and hooks procreating behind our sofas at night ... hmmmm.... i start to like this idea (I am making fun with the needles, but the idea to start something together was meant in honest, I really think it would be great to combine talents)
Needle animation would be super cute 💕I'll say good night to them (and enjoy party) before I go to bed tonight.
Talking about knitting and art, I think about implementing a knitting AI for long, which I proposed to Japanese funding program one year ago and was kicked out in the final proposal presentation 😅
Or another idea I proposed to an artist in residence program in Lithuania ............. in 2017 !? Time pasts so fast!
Ohhhh love your illustration!!! And I am hugely curious about your knitting AI idea, and asked myself if its for pattern or for free form for handknit or machine knit (so many questions... it really sounds fascinating) Is there any chance to apply for in Germany?
I have wondered about those. I only have one set of round needles and I don't really like them but it might be because of the rigidity of the cable. Most of my needles were passed down to me from my grandmothers.
I think rigidity is different by brands or lots. I found I like Lana Grossa circular needles than that of Addi, another popular brand in Germany. And ja, it's nice you have needles from your grandma. I wonder where are my mother's and grandma's ... I only have some baking tins from my mother 😉
Thank you for the tip on brands.
I really wish I know how to knit.
My mum was good at it and I knitted when I was a child.
Am so ashamed now that I forgot how to.
Thanks for sharing this tip
You can start anytime :) I knitted with my grandma and my mama and had a long blank in my 20s. Then I started knitting again after I moved to Europe (knitting heaven!). I think your hands remember how to do it. Dive in Raverly, you'll start knitting.
Magic Loop - makes it so easy to use a circular needle for sock knitting :)
I see, it's called magic loop. You are the Sock knitting guru 😁And I learn from you a lot of words!
In crochet, there's a Magic Loop, too. For amigurumi and other things worked in the round, where you start in a small loop and you can pull on the yarn end to close that to a very tiny hole.
Wow, I've never thought about this for crochet as crocheting needles are straight. Hahaha you know really a lot, @muscara. You are Needle Work Goddess!
Here's an example by the late Elizzza:
Beautiful thanks for sharing @akipponn
Thanks @smilestiches!
I have used magic loop like this, but I prefer longer double-pointed needles and sometimes use 2 sets in a pinch (which is what knitters did before there were circular needles with cables. For some strange reason, I find all those points less annoying than the loop of cable. I'm glad every knitter can find methods that work for them. !BBH
You are member of the double-pointed needle party 😁I was used to be so but once I broke my favorite needles with my feet by trying half done socks ... The experience was so traumatic (it was beautiful wooden multicolor needles) and I changed to circular needle party. But that's right as you wrote, "every knitter can find methods that work for them." 👍
SOrry for jumping in... but I want to traumatise you further (joking, but its really a bit nauseating) I once lost a metal tapestry needle on our carpet and while searching for it barefoot (yeah, clever me) I stepped int it so forcefully I managed to insert this completely blunt needle into my sole... 🤢🤮😱 thankfully not very deep, so it was only a bit painful but healed fast.
You need to stack more BBH (Each 1000 BBH in your wallet allows you to send 1 BBH per day)
