My pillow got flat and I wanted to have a new one. Although I like German fluffy pillows with down, I cannot simply go for it when I think about the animals and the environment.
Then I remembered that an organic store showcased pine flakes as pillow fillings. It smelled so nice and I decided to make my new pillow with it.
When I took a look at how to call the pine flakes, I found on a webpage that I can mix with other filling such as millet, wool, and cotton. According to the explanation sheet that came with the pine flakes, I must replace the filling after sometime. I'll try mixing with other things next time 😊
I made a bag to fill with the pine flakes with my old pajama that got hole in the back recently 😅 It was a good old memory pajama with an organic cotton that I made when my daughter was in my berry. So I kept the fabric. I'm happy to find a good way to use it.
I really like to sleep from my teenager time and wanted to give nice covers to the new pillow. I ordered fabrics from Marimekko, one of my favorite design brands.
Ah they are so beautiful ....... I think it was one of the most expensive fabric shopping but I don't have any regret.
I didn't want to cut the fabric in small pieces so I just make an open end bag of 40 cm by the fabrics' width. I'm happy with the new pillow and covers.
My daughter also likes them and took one of them for hers 😁
I wish I can travel to Finland to see Finnish design some day.
That's my Needlework Monday. Have a nice day and start of the week!
Pine flakes thats interesting! (never heard of it)
...and does it smell like summer evening walking through pine forests? I bet that would give you the best dreams😊
Yes, I feel like being in a forest. I've been a good sleeper already but I look forward to going to bed even more these days.
It's my first time to try it. In Japan we have pillows filled with buckwheat. It's a bit old fashion thing that grannies have. I bought a pillow filled with some crops for my partner in Berlin. I must see where it is 😊
😄
Buckwheat, crazy, maybe I prefer to eat it though😉 A bit similar to cherry-stone pillows?
It doesn't smell 😁 I like to eat buckwheat though.
I had cherry stones in a small pillow which I got from my midwife for my daughter. It's warmed up and put on berries to calm down diarrhea. It seems it's common in Germany. Cherry stone pillow sounds nice too 🍒
Yes it seems to be a common thing, I also know it in like mountain places they use it in winter to take the warm pillow to bed with you...:)
First time hearing about pine flakes, I am checking more about that. You made a beautiful pillow, it would be great if I can get one as well... Cheers.
It was my first time to try it. So far I am really satisfied with it. Maybe you can find local natural material pillow as we have buckwheat filled one in Japan.
Ooooh, delicious, dearest @akipponn !!
I adore your using alternative fillings, instead of just buying what the shops give us, which is usually toxic to some degree or another... I've been thinking too about making my own mattress, pillows, duvet: it's great to see others doing their own domestic alchemy. 😍
Mattress might be a challenging project but will be a rewarding one 😊 What I like the most is smell and in away rough texture of pine flakes. I feel like sleeping in a forest 🌲 Look forward to reading your DIY bedding items project in the future!
I never knew that pine flakes would be a nice substitute for pillow fillings. And yeah it would smell good. Awesome. 😍
Thanks @jonalyn2020! It was new to me too. So far it's great. I will see how it works :)
You did found some good use for the pajama, I have learnt a lesson from here, not everything should be disposed after all.
The pillow case is beautiful and I like that you didn't cut it destroying those lovely pattern and shape.
Do have some beautiful sleep and surely those good smell will give you a sound sleep.
Well my dear @akipponn 💕💖
There are two reasons; I want to use good material as long as possible ....... and fabrics especially good ones are extremely expensive in Germany compared with those in Japan 😌 Thanks monica, I'm sleeping well these days.
💖🤗.
You welcome dear.
