Just to prove I don't always make socks, here is a picture of another project I just started. I bought some beautiful, fine weight cotton/linen last fall and spent some months pondering what that yarn wanted to be. (Yarn knows what it wants to be, and work goes better when you work with the yarn and not against it, I think.)
I am curious how many can name this technique I am using--also curious to know what terms you might use in your own countries/states for this technique.
Here is an update after several rows:
