Happy weekend dear creative Hivers, wishing everyone a splendid weekend.

It was a fun day for us at my children's school yesterday as we celebrated the fusion Of fashion and culture, celebrating our cultural heritage. As the world is evolving, the young generation also tends to adopt the Western culture more than their own, so to make sure children don't forget their roots and also appreciate our rich cultural tapestry, a Cultural Day is always fixed at least twice in a year for the children to get to know and express their culture.

They are expected to dress in their cultural attire, each representing their tribes, there are lots of tribes in Nigeria, including the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Efik, etc, the parents and teachers are not left out, but not only do we dress up the cultural way, we parents are also encouraged to prepare our traditional meals which we bring to the school and share with other tribes, tasting from theirs as well, which further unites us tribes and grow the love among us and to crown it all, it is always a fun-filled day.

This time, I was opportune to make different of their attire, my little niece Buba and Iro attire, also my nephews attire as well, one of them represented the Yoruba Clan, since his father is Yoruba, while the other represented Niger Delta, also his father's origin and I also made my daughters attire which I would be sharing the making process in today's needlework post, and hopefully share the making process of others soon.

My daughter represented the 'Ibibio' tribe, a native of Akwa-Ibom state, currently, there are 36 States in Nigeria, thankfully, it was not a stressful attire to make, as I made theirs at the very last minute. It is a simple gathered dress, commonly referred to as 'Oyonyon' in our native dialect, and it was accessorized with a coral bead around the neck.

Materials Used

  • shiny crepe fabric
  • ankara fabric
  • Zipper

Making Process

  • I started by drafting the upper side of the dress, it's an off the shoulder bodice

  • I also added straps to replace the deducted off-shoulder length.

Here, I joined the upper patterns together and also added belts by the sides

  • Next, I gathered the Ankara fabric that adds the extra length to the dress

  • Continuing, I joined the upper and lower parts together and also gathered its lower lining beneath.

  • I also sewed in the zipper to the back of the dress, joining it together.

  • For the sleeves, I cut out an off shoulder puffy sleeves pattern, which I passed elastic in the upper and lower case I created,

And here is my beautiful princess representing her Ibibio heritage.

I'm already looking forward to another cultural day, and also have sparks of another interesting cultural attire I could make, even though it won't be taking place until next year, at least, we have lots of time to get prepared, the children had fun, we adults did too, our culture is life and cannot be erased.

Your baby did represent the tribe well and thanks for a mother that can sew, you didn't have to look for costumes to buy. The event looks colorful with all the different tribes.
