Ankara Dress with Side Flounce Beauty

Happy New Week dear lovely creators on Hive, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready to face the week with renewed energy and passion. As we begin this new week, I want to express my gratitude to this wonderful community for your love and support and also wish everyone a splendid and productive week ahead.

Last I shared with us how I made my stylish mesh blouse, and today it's going to be about the beautiful armless ankara dress with side flounce I made as the outfit that complimentary the blouse.

These days I find myself wanting to try something new with the dresses I make, sometimes I get inspiration online and just infuse them in my work, and other times it could be at church, on the street, or even the market. Nigeria is indeed a blessed country filled with many brilliant minds and stylish individuals both young and old, there is never a day I step out of my house that I don't come back feeling inspired.

I wore this dress to church yesterday feeling beautiful and also receiving lovely compliments from the women, two of them even asked that I remake the same outfit for them and I was more than happy to oblige, marketing oneself through what we do is a sure way of getting fast recognition and encouragement. It's always exciting to see people appreciate my work, and it motivates me to continue doing my best creating, learning, and pushing forward.

Cutting And Sewing Process

IMG_20250314_153246_529.jpg

  • I started by drafting and cutting out the upper part of this dress, using a bustier pattern for the front of this dress, as this form of pattern-making helps give the bust a well-contoured look and fit
  • I used a basic back pattern as well, note that I replicated all main fabric patterns on the cotton lining which Used to turn them in neatly

IMG_20250315_160114_341.jpg

  • I joined the patterns before turning them with their respective lining.

IMG_20250314_153154_257.jpg

  • For the lower part of the dress, I used a straight skirt pattern, which I also turned using its lining
  • Then I joined both the front and back upper and lower parts by the waist area.

  • Before joining the sides, I cut out a flare whose radius is the length of the side I will be attaching it to form the flounce, I cut out double of this flare and turned them with each other for a better finish.

  • Sewed the zipper to the back side of the dress,

  • And here is the final beautiful look of the ankara dress, it can be styled both with or without the mesh blouse, depending on my mood, feeling happy to add this beautiful set of clothing to my wardrobe. I will be starting my church sister's dress today.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the process of this dress-making, will you be recreating yours? In case you find any part confusing, I will be more than happy to render further explanation.
