Greetings dear friends on Hive, hope you are already having the best start to your day, the first week of the year has rolled out already, and before you know it, we will be in awe to be anticipating another new year, so my advice to everyone is to make the use of the moment you have today, don't procrastinate, go ahead and do what you desire, pick up that unfinished project, learn that new skill you desire to, and during the year, let the year 2025 be a year of positive accomplishment, this is my mantra for the year, and I hope these words reach out to someone out there today.
The holidays are over and everyone seems to be back to work, even the children are back at school, giving me that quiet environment I've missed for a couple of weeks now, though I've trained myself to be able to function in any kind of environment irrespective of the noise since it is inevitable at some point, the peace of this moment is my best moment when embarking on a sewing project, as it makes me think clearly and faster without any distraction, I also get to do as much work as I desire, even at a faster speed, and it is in this very moment I made this beautiful dress for my neighbor's daughter who just clocked 13.
I want a big girl dress, she said to me, I don't know what it is with teenagers wanting to grow up so fast, haha, as I've had to witness the same experience with other teenage girls as well, 'don't worry, I will make a big girl's dress for you, I assured her, even when I wasn't sure of what to make then, but finally got inspired and came up with this midi length mermaid dress, which I also love after completing the look, maybe I will make another big girl dress for myself.
Materials Used
- Ankara Fabric
- Lining Fabric
- Zipper
- Satin fabric
Cutting And Sewing Process
- The first step was to draft and cut out the dress pattern, I used a straight gown pattern for both the front and back.
- Next, I turned both patterns with their lining piece and held in the waist dart for both the front and the back
- I also joined the front and back by the shoulders
- Continuing, I joined them by the sides using the seam allowance giving and making sure I followed her measurement
- To extend the length of the dress, because the straight gown stops above the kennel, I cut out a full circle whose radius is the hem of the straight gown, so I sewed it around the hem of the dress after turning its ling as well.
- Finally, I made a smocked puffy sleeve using the purple-colored satin fabric, and that completes the final look of this dress, not forgetting to add a zipper to close up the back of the dress.
Tolu will be getting her big girl's dress this evening, and I'm sure she will love it. I hope you do, too.

I'm so sure Tolu will love and appreciate her big girl dress, it looks so great and you have done a great job with the fabric.
You just gave me an idea of what to make with my gifted African print fabric.
Thanks, Bimpcy, and I'm glad to know you tapped an inspiration.
Thanks for sharing your great and beautiful creativity.
Very inspiraring intro
I can remember when I was a teenager I could wait to clock 18, little did I know that been an adult is crazy. I wish I had taken it slow and enjoy every moment
But anyway, this dress is beautiful🥰, I'm sure she would fall in love with her big girl dress 😂
I also feel this way, that's just the irony of life, children want to be adults fast and adults wish they could be younger.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like the dress style
The final result is impressive. It is so beautiful, stylish, and elegant. It's good to see how you made this. Love it. Thanks!
Thank you❤
