Greetings dear creative friends on Hive, feels good to make it to another refreshing week in this new year, wishing everyone a blessed and fulfilling week.

It's cool Monday morning here, the weather still feels like the holiday weather even though work and schooling have resumed for everyone, it's cold and dry, but I still prefer this weather to the hot and sweaty one, and hope it lingers on at least to the second month of the year. It's a good day to hop on a sewing project, but not today for me, instead I will be spending the day reading and preparing for my upcoming exams starting later this week.

Thankfully, I still have an interesting sewing project which I just concluded last weekend to share with you all today, what's a Needleworkmonday without a needlework post to share? This time I made a dress for a little girl who attends the same local church as mine, a brilliant young mind I must say, and very talented, Simi plays the violin in church and also has a peculiar taste in fashion, she kind of reminds me of my young self, even though I never had the opportunity of owning fancy dresses as a child, I remember always performing DIYs on some of my dresses that my mum got tired of complaining, I knew what I wanted, and wouldn't let my num pick my dress, I remember also pining or cello taping flowers 🌺 to some of my dress even though the flowers ended up wilting as they were fresh flowers and not fabric flowers, it was fun for me then doing all those stuff, I never knew it was an inborn talent that needed cultivating, thankfully, I still found my way back as an adult to do what I love.

For Simi, getting a new dress means she has a lot of explaining to tell me, she knows what she wants and describes it for me as she demonstrates, which I'm always very excited to watch and listen to, I already see talent in her, she would make a very good fashion illustrator if trained, I already suggested this to her mum, maybe as time goes on, she would be a designer too because little demonstration like this shouldn't be overlooked, and talents even pays more today. "I want a fishtail gown," she told me "with a rough balloon hand", that was her exact description, now balloons aren't rough, in the other hand, balloons are smooth then how do you create a rough balloon, she just had to remind me of a dress I made for her friends, ha😃 How shocked and impressed I was.

Materials used

  • Lace fabric
  • Satin fabric
  • applique
  • Zipper

Cutting And Sewing Process

IMG_20241227_151726_206.jpg

  • I started by cutting out the lower part of the dress, using an A-line skirt pattern for both the front and back, since I will be joining it to the upper side of the dress, I cut out the lower part first because I had just 2 yards of fabrics and had to manage it to be enough.

  • Next, I cut out the upper side of the dress, giving it a yoke around the neckline area, which won't be covered with the satin

  • Next, I turned all patterns with their satin base for a cleaner finishing
  • Then join the upper and lower sides of the dress by the waist

  • And also joined them by their sides, noting her measurement, I also sewed in a zipper to the back of the dress.

  • For the sleeves, I cut out a basic sleeve which serves as the base of the smocked puffy sleeves, to achieve the puffiness, I drew boxes on the wrong side of the satin and pleated their eyes by 1.5 inches.

And here is the beautiful final result, I added these beautiful dazzling applique to the waist and chest area, Simi loves her new dress, same as Tolu and her sister, these three friends made my hands ache from taking several pictures of them. I am most happy about these young minds and see a brighter future ahead, also happy to bring their fashion dreams to life, an opportunity I never had.

I’m not surprised Simi and Tolu love their dress. It’s so nice and you did a great job with the fish tail design.
