Happy weekend Hive!
I hope your weekend already got started with rest and fun, well for me, it just did, after making this beautiful draped off-shoulder sleeve dress for my sister who is representing as a wedding guest today, her colleague is getting married, after my exams, I thought I could have a day or to have some good rest, but trust my sister to have an impromptu sewing project for me,
"why didn't you tell me earlier?" I asked feeling a bit tensed because she knows I can't say no to her, but when she gave the excuse of earlier deciding not to attend the wedding because she didn't want to distract me while I was still writing my exams, and never thought I would finish just when the wedding is almost taking place.
Everyone would be there, she kept saying, and it seemed she would be the odd one not to attend just because she couldn't find someone else to design her dress other than me, her sister. I had less than 24 hours to make the dress, I knew I could do it, without some sacrifices though, yea, I've been offline for the past 24 hours and I've also been faced with similar challenges in the past and knew I needed no distraction so I could finish on time.
When she showed me the picture of the style inspiration, I just couldn't resist anymore and just got to work, the fascinating part of the style for me is the drape around the hip area of the dress.
Without further ado, let's get on to it.
Materials used
- Lace fabric
- Dutchess fabric
- Satin Fabric
- Matching thread
- Zipper
- Belt buckle
Cutting And Sewing Process
- I started by drafting the upper part of the dress using an off-the-shoulder bustier pattern, and also a basic back pattern.
- Next I turned it using its lining piece which is the satin fabric while the Duchess is used as the main fabric.
- Next, I drafted the lower part of the dress using a straight skirt pattern and also turned it with a satin fabric, by the time it was already getting dark, but I kept on sewing, so pardon the low light images, as they were captured at night.
- Going back to the upper bodice, I traced and cut out a Basque waistline, and also repeated the same on the front skirt pattern.
- Now my favourite part, the hip drapes, I don't have a dress form yet, so these drapes were done on a flat surface, first getting creative with this rounded belt buckle, I broke the middle part out, and wrapped strips of the lace fabric round it.
- Next, I cut out my desired length of lace and passed it on both sides of the rounded buckle, pinning both sides before sewing.
- I also added a zipper to the back of the dress and joined both sides of the front and back of the dress
- The sleeve is very easy to make, the length was determined based on the deducted length of the off-shoulder pattern, then gathered around the sleeve area.
And here is the final look, I quickly took these shots before my sister happily took the dress away to get ready for the event, she promised to bring me some piece of the wedding cake for all my stress lol, what can I say, I'm the big sis after all, I'm happy she is happy to make it to the wedding she already gave up on attending and who would know that this Hives was made at the last minute. Finally, I can now have a restful weekend and also catch up on the hours I've missed on Hive.

What a beautiful dress. A special wedding guest is incoming for sure
She sure is, thank you very much.
It is a beautiful dress, you are a very good sister, it stresses me out a lot when they ask me to sew something at the last minute and like you I always breathe and then I put on a lot of energy and say yes and start sewing hahaha, I hope it brings you a good slice of cake of reward
Thanks, I appreciate your comment, you can do relate, I felt all the emotions you just described, well, what can we do, all for the love of family and sewing. I hope the cake comes sooner than anticipated.
Cheers to sisterly love. It will be odd to not attend, I totally understand her but bringing it this late can be soooo
Thank goodness you were able to finish it. Best wished in your exams.
Thanks sis, One of the moments I'm proud to be a designer. 😍
If it looks beautiful on the mannequin, I can imagine how it looked on your sister, running to make a dress from scratch is not easy, but I congratulate you because that draping was beautiful.
Have a nice weekend
I congratulate you for everything you managed to do for your sister, and how beautiful the dress is, to make it so fast it was perfect, I liked it very much in its entirety.
You did this in a short time? It’s so hard to believe yet not hard to believe because I know the kind of talent you carry
It’s really nice dear
Yeah, I did, it was tiring at the end no doubt, I drained myself out, and still in the process of recuperating my joy is that it got finished beautifully and right on time.
Thanks so much sis.
Proud of you!
Hm! Professional mama
You dey do wella
Wow, the dress is very lovely.
Less than 24hrs! You've got a real talent 👏
Wait so you mean tailors can actually be this fast yet they decide to use a month to sew a very simple style😂😂

Lol it's determination o😅
Don't mind us, it is mostly due to a lot of jobs at hand, so we try to meet up with everyone one at a time, at least for me. 😅
Oh yeah, I totally understand 😅, you guys are trying too
If not for God, I would have argued with you that you didn't design this cloth within 24hrs. Is so fine!
The drape around the hip area of the dress is what caught my attention 🤭
lol, I did, I'm that dedicated to sewing
Thank you very much for this comment
This looks gorgeous 🥰 you are so great with your crafts to bring this to life within 24 hours.
I wish you more success in your all efforts.
