It is cold in Arizona

Hello, sweet needlework friends. While this is not the best photo of me, I just loved the way the tree branches look like part of my crazy hair.

I took the photo early in the morning, right after I cast off the last stitch of this combination cowl/dickie. It was 17 degrees Fahrenheit - that is -9 for my celsius thinking friends.

In San Diego, it never gets that cold. But I have been hiking early in the morning and the temps were close to freezing. I figured a cowl will serve me during my stay here in Northeastern Arizona as well as at home.

It all started when I went to a store in Windowrock on the Navajo Nation and I saw a wall of this.

A wall of yarn. Imagine how my heart started racing and a big smile formed on my face. Did I mention that I am in love with wool? All kinds of wool.

Many Navajo people are weaving the most beautiful rugs and are using this yarn for their art. I found out that it is the Lambs Pride from the Brown Sheep Wool Comapny.

Most of the strands are 85% wool and 15% Mohair. Some are 100% wool. None are superwashed which I love.

The best surprise was that the prices on the Rez were super reasonable. I am sure you can guess what happened. Yup. I did buy a bunch.

So far, I have used them for hats, felted slippers, house socks, and now, this cowl.

My goal was to utilize leftovers.

But after starting, I ended up sticking with two main contrast colors.

I threw in a little red since I had started with a dark red leftover and wanted to pull everything together.

Here is the wrong side in case you are interested.

I am thinking of writing up a pattern for this cowl. If I do, you all will be the first to know. Actually, I would publish it here.

Here is another way of wearing the cowl.

Let me know if you are interested in a pattern.

I am also publishing this article on Steem and on the Sustainable Living Podcast website

Wrap up very well and eat a !PIZZA. Cheers.

Thank you :)

Taking pictures with hair and tree branches is a creative thought. Your handiwork is beautiful

thank you :)

Haha, love the branches hair - that's a very creative hairpiece! 😍

Beautiful colours in that wool, I love the pink and green combination. The pattern would be lovely. What brand of needles do you use?

For this project, I used the Cocobolo interchangeable from Knitpicks. Wood.
But my new favorites are the ChiaGoo. My daughter in law bought me their large interchangeable set for Christmas. It goes from US 2 (2.75mm) to US 15 (10mm). Metal. Totally love it

Ah, I must check them. Thanks!

Be prepared for a sticker shock. They are expensive. And do not buy them from Amazon. Apparently, there are a bunch of fake ones on sale there that are really low quality.

The wall of yarn is soooo beautiful. I would have gone crazy and perhaps ended buying nothing because I wanted all :-DDD And your cowl is amazing. I love the look of colorwork but am too nervous to knit with several strands of yarn at the same time. Sadly...
But I think it would absolutely be worth it if you wrote the pattern (perhaps even publish it on ravelry ... for money?)

Thank you. I am taking a class right now on clear pattern writing and think I will give it a try. You all will be the first to know and maybe can be test knitters :)

And believe you me. It was really hard to not get one of each... Especially since the price here is half of the cost you pay everywhere else.

Very nice thanks for sharing @mariannewest

Beautiful design, I love the color contraste.

Thank you so much, Saulos

Yellow with green are amazing 🤩 nice Monday, it's good for hiking preparation

The weather is very cold but with hiking will become exciting ☺️

I will be wearing it today for sure when I am out and about.

Oh great 👍 Have you ever come across some species of animals or singing birds in the morning in forest?

there aren't really forests around here. What I see mostly are prairie dogs and lots of birds. Big ravens and such.
Hiking at home, I have encountered rattle snakes, coyotes, rabbits, deer, and of course birds :)

I love the colors you used with your cowl @mariannwest!! Very nice!!

Thank you so much!!!

That's a really beautiful Cowl Marianne! Lovely colours also. I would love to own one of your Cowls but daaaang i'm all the way over in England!

Oh well.

Peace out!

That photo of the hair branches is so cute and fun!

I wouldn’t have been able to hold my composure in that store. Look at all that beautiful yarn! 😳

Your cowl is so pretty. The red you used to tie everything together works really well. You did such a lovely job ~

Thank you so much!!
And it was hard not to buy everything :)

I have not seen one of those worn around here in years, I guess it is about time for their return to mainstream style!

Right? Everything is coming back. Did you know that there is a dickie craze right now?
I like the cowls since they are much faster to knit than scarves and are very useful.

No, I had not heard anything about a comeback for dickies, that is really wild!

you made me laugh with your branches and your hair 🤣🤣🤣 I found this post about the hood. it's amazing how great this pattern looks: very professional work, my dear!!! 👍 Wow!!!! so much amazing yarn in this store!!!! 😮 I also want to go there!!!!! hee hee I would also buy a bunch of yarn!!! 😅

I am glad that I made you laugh 😄

Yarn stores are very dangerous! So many beautiful things to buy and not that much money in my pocket lol

you are 100% right about yarn stores 😁

Some time ago there were a lot of trends to weave wool. In homes, in offices, groups of women used to prepare clothes for their loved ones with their own needles as soon as winter started. Now the machines took away this pleasure.
This multicolored face cover is very beautiful. Enjoy the cold.

Thank you so much.
There is a big trend for people to weave, spin, knit, and crochet. But the big difference is that now, it is an expensive hobby not a cheaper way to make clothing...
