Hello Hive
What can we call a luxury dress, or how much does a luxury outfit cost? Should we say $10, $20, or what range of price have you bought an item to consider it a luxury outfit?
I have admired this fabric for almost a year now and have hoped that someday I would make an outfit for myself using this same fabric. From that last year until now the price of the fabric rose from less than about a dollar to $2.
I have a children program to attend tomorrow in company of a team. We have planned to visit some schools/schoolchildren to put some smile on their faces, and what to wear became my challenge. I have worn virtually all the smart dresses in my box, and my friend has warned me about my appearance for tomorrow.
I felt like it was the perfect time to sew something new and a dress at thing, rather than go for another fabric I decided to go for my dream fabric too. I got a trouser length of it for $2 hoping that my seasmtress mind would manage it for the outfit
What designs will I make of my dress became another issue, but in order not to waste time, I decided to replicate Ana's birthday dress design for myself. I love the design too and desired something like that for myself. Without giving it much thought and consideration of my fabric quantity, I began to cut and sew the lower parts of the dress.
My pains started when the fabric got exhausted midway and couldn't cut out all the necessary pieces of the outfit as needed. I sat down for an hour and was wondering why I had missed calculating the amount of fabrics needed before even choosing to sew such designs.
I was short on cash and had to reach out to @bimpcy to loan me some amount as the outfit has to be completed with a matter of urgency. She spared me some fiats and I retired to the store and got an extra trouser length of the fabric for $2 again, making it $4 for the fabric. I purchased some satin, linings, and the zipper, making it about $6 in all. Luckily the store wasn't far from home; a cab dropped me off.
Gosh!I never planned to spend this much.
I returned to continue sewing only to realize that this fabric is such a pain. The needle doesn't pass through it, and I have to use papers to support the tension of the fabrics.
Imagine cutting bits of paper to sew this many long pleats all around the circle of a flare. At this point, all my interest in the dress vanished. I was already tired and wished to get done with the dress.
If not that I needed it badly tomorrow, I could have dumped it in my stash of WIPs and continued sewing yet.
Then the final one that broke me completely was the front block.
I thought that I was already familiar with sewing overlapped outfits and did not need to do any paper work before cutting this.
I was totally wrong; having sewn my outfit, cutting and sewing all the necessary parts, I made a terrible mistake with the front overlap.
The cleavage is overexposed, and I can't wear the dress no matter what; even if I want to wear a camisole underneath, I don't have any matching ones at home.
Paper work often helped me achieve this, but I was in a hurry, and the fabric kept overstretching while I was cutting it.
Even after checking the overlapping multiple times before sewing, it ended up ruining my dress. I was done with stitching before realizing how bad this was , maybe I could have made an adjustment before closing up the dress but the deed is done. There is no time to endure the pain of unstitching and redoing this again, I may just have to wear any of my other dresses however.
I have made several beautiful overlapped dresses and blouses that have never exposed the bust area and cleavage in the manner that this has done. The odds are not in my favor today, and imagine how the damage that had happened to such expensive outfits makes me feel terrible, worst still. It can't be useful for tomorrow's outing.
In all, I made expensive and beautiful nonsense amidst stress, sweat, and imaginary tears. This would have been my luxury dress considering how expensive the fabric is and the time and sacrifice it took me to make it, but it is what it is.
