First round: Stranded Knitting
Keine Zeit zum Schreiben, ich muss Stricken! Denn was ich befürchtet hatte, ist eingetroffen: Der Socken in der ersten Runde der SockMadness hat ein "Stranded Knitting" Muster. Das ist ein zweifarbiges Muster, bei dem beide Fäden gleichzeitig gehalten werden und der nicht genutzte Faden auf der Innenseite emitgeführt wird (daher der Name - "strand" bedeutet hier Faden). Im Deutschen werden Namen wie Fair Isle oder Norwegermuster genutzt, die aber (um ganz spitzfindig zu werden) unterschiedliche Dinge bezeichnen.
No time to write, I have to knit! Because what I feared has come true: The sock in the first round of SockMadness has a stranded knitting pattern. This is a two-coloured pattern where both threads are used simultaneously and the unused thread is emitted on the inside (hence the name - "strand" means thread here).

Egal. Fakt ist: Ich HASSE stranded knitting. Ich schaffe es nicht, die richtige Fadenspannung zu halten, ich habe Löcher oder der hintere Faden schaut durch, es ist zu eng oder zu weit... Nein, ist nicht meins. Und es liegt nicht an den beiden gleichzeitig gehaltenen Fäden: Double Knitting klappt problemlos.
Never mind. The fact is: I HATE stranded knitting. I can't keep the correct thread tension, I have holes or the back thread is showing through, it is too tight or too wide... No, I definitely don't like it. And it's not the two threads held at the same time: I love Double Knitting and can do it without any problems.
Ich habe mich jetzt einige Tage durch diesen Socken gequält und hoffe ihn morgen fertig zu stellen. Und dann geht es gleich an den zweiten des Paares - denn ich stricke ja gegen die Zeit. Oder besser gesagt: gegen fünf andere in meiner Gruppe. In der zweiten Runde stehen nämlich fünf Plätze weniger zur Verfügung und die langsamsten fliegen raus (elf haben ihre Socken schon fertig). Und ich will nach dieser Tortur zumindest mit dem Weiterkommen "belohnt" werden - ich hatte mir Runde 2 als Ziel gesetzt. Was auch realistisch war, bevor dieses blöde Muster kam.
I've been wrestling with this sock for a few days now and hope to finish it tomorrow. And then it goes straight to the second of the pair - because I am knitting against the clock. Or rather: against five others in my group. Because in the second round there are five places less available and the slowest will be eliminated (eleven knitters already finished their socks). And after this ordeal I want to be "rewarded" at least with getting further - I had set round 2 as my goal. Which was realistic before this stupid pattern came up.
Ja, ich weiß: Das Muster sieht klasse aus. Aber die Socken sind, weil nach ganz genauen Angaben gestrickt, vollkommen missgestaltet: Das Ding ist von der Unterseite der Ferse bis zum Bündchen 32 Zentimeter lang - fast schon Kniestrümpfe. Und weil es so lang ist und die meisten Leute keine Spargelbeine haben, da passt es mir oben nicht auf die Waden. Denn durch die mitgeführten Fäden ist dieses Gewebe nicht wirklich elastisch. Wenigstens könnte der Fußteil mir passen - dann kann ich hinterher immer noch überlegen, ob ich den Schaft aufribbel und neu mache.
Yeah, I know. The pattern looks great. But since the socks are knitted to exact specifications, they are completely misshapen: The thing is 32 centimeters (13 inches) from the bottom of the heel to the cuff - almost knee-length. And because it is so long and most people don't have ultra-thin legs, it doesn't fit over my calves. Due to the threads carried along, this fabric is not really elastic. At least the foot part could fit me - then I can always think about unraveling the shaft and redo it afterwards.
Den zweiten Socken werde ich mit einer dickeren Nadel stricken und ich hoffe, dass er mir dann passen wird. Schau'n mer mal!
I will knit the second sock with a thicker needle and I hope that it will fit me then. Let's wait and see!

But I hate it - hate it - hate it.
Started with the pattern part at the toe this morning. Made a mistake in the first row, noticed it after 10 minutes, had to tink (=knit backwarts). Took me an hour to undo the mistake.
14 of the 38 places for the next round are already taken. It took me five days for this sock (if I manage to finish it today) - with no problems occurring, I will finish the pair in the next nine day. But getting to the next round... Well... Perhaps I will soon make my first video for Needleworkmonday: Unraveling these socks.
Lol, stranded knitting must be pretty bad, think I will avoid it. I look forward to the video instead of seeing the finished sock.
How frustrating!!! I feel you. So much work and than a bad fit is more then annoying and stranded knitting is also not for me (perhaps after two weeks of meditation retreat it could work... or maybe not 😂😂😂)
And I misunderstood, I thought all people in one group knit against the other groups, so that your group is a kind of support group...
It's a mix - the knitters are supportive. It's interesting with people from around the world (in my group only North American and European), but on the other hand you are working against each other. 550 Posts were written since the team was formed on March 16. There is a group, too, for the German-speaking participants with over 5000 posts since the Start of this SockMadness on February 29.
