Ice Cubes? Eiswürfel?
Ja, es geht hier um das Färben mit Eiswürfeln, genau genommen handelt es sich um Wasser in dem Lebensmittelfarbe aufgelöst wurde und dann gefroren. Mit Lebensmittelfarbe lassen wie schon in einem vorigen Post erwähnt nur Garne auf Proteinbasis färben, also Wolle oder Seide. Durch die Färbung mit Eiswürfeln kann man interessante Effekte erzielen und es ist auch einfach und schön mit Kindern zu machen. Dafür braucht es kein Garn, man kann z.b. auch Kleidungsstücke und Stoffe färben.
Yes, this is about dyeing with ice cubes, technically speaking it is water in which food dye has been dissolved and then frozen. As mentioned in a previous post, food dye can only be used to dye protein-based yarns, such as wool or silk. By dyeing with ice cubes you can achieve interesting effects and it is also easy and fun to do with children. You don't need yarn for this, you can also dye clothes or fabrics.
Auf die Idee gekommen bin ich durch eine Gruppe bei Ravelry, dem "Harry Potter Knit/Crochet House Cup". Davon erzähle ich euch in ein paar Wochen, wenn ich mich da ganz zurechtgefunden habe :)

Was man dafür braucht / What you need
| - Garn im Strang, - Lebensmittelfarbe (hier: Ostereierfarben in Tablettenform), - Handschuhe, Abdeckmaterial für die Arbeitsfläche und ggf. Schürze, - Essig (hier: Essigessenz), - Eiswürfelbehälter (oder z. B. Plastikverschlüsse von Getränken), - Ofenfeste Form (Großer Bräter oder Jenaer Glas, am besten mit Deckel), - Löffel oder Pipetten. | -Yarn in a hank, - Food colouring (I used Easter egg colours in tablet form), - Gloves, covering material for the work surface and an apron if necessary, - Vinegar (I used simple vinegar essence), - Ice cube containers (or plastic caps for beverages), - Ovenproof form (large pan) or pyrex glass, preferably with lid, - Spoons or pipettes. |

Schritt 1 / Step 1
In einer Schüssel oder großem Glas die Lebensmittelfarbe in Wasser auflösen. Man kann dabei auch gerne Farben mischen, z.B. rot und blau um lila Farbe zu bekommen. Oder man kann unterschiedliche Verhältnisse von Farbe und Wasser nehmen, was hinterher hellere oder dunklere Partien gibt.
Dissolve the food colouring in water in a bowl or large glass. You can also mix colours, e.g. red and blue to get purple. Or you can use different proportions of colour and water, which gives lighter or darker areas afterwards.
Das bunte Wasser kommt dann in einen Eiswürfelbehälter oder Flaschenverschlüsse, natürlich gehen auch Eiswürfelbeutel oder einfache Gefrierbeutel. Gefrierbeutel fest verschließen und flach hinlegen, dann kann man hinterher das Eis zerbrechen und hat so selbstgemachte Eiswürfel, bei denen man sogar die Größe halbwegs bestimmen kann.
The coloured water then goes into an ice cube container or bottle caps, of course ice cube bags or simple freezer bags are also possible. Close the freezer bag tightly and lay it down flat, then you can break the ice afterwards and have homemade ice cubes, where you can even determine the size a bit.
Das Garn in Essigwasser legen: ein viertel Liter Essig auf einen Liter Wasser und 'ziehen' lassen. Die Zeit, in der das Farbwasser gefriert, sollte ausreichen.
Place the yarn in vinegar water: one part vinegar on four parts water and leave to 'soak'. The time in which the coloured water freezes should be sufficient.
Schritt 2 / Step 2
Arbeitsfläche abdecken. Das Garn gut ausdrücken und in die ofenfeste Form legen. Ich hatte keine und habe deswegen einen Bratschlauch genommen. Nun Handschuhe anziehen, die Eiswürfel aus ihrer Form nehmen und nach Belieben auf dem Garn oder auch im Garn verteilen. Nun kommt der Deckel auf die Form.
Cover the work surface. Squeeze the yarn well and place it in the ovenproof form. I didn't have any, so I used an oven bag. Now put on gloves, take the ice cubes out of their mould and spread them as you like on the yarn or even between the strands of the yarn. Now put the lid on the form.
Schritt 3 / Step 3
In den kalten Ofen stellen und diesen auf 100 Grad erhitzen. Wenn diese Temperatur erreicht ist, den Ofen 20 Minuten laufen lassen. Ganz wichtig: den Deckel nicht abnehmen und den Ofen auch gar nicht öffnen! Die Eiswürfel schmelzen jetzt langsam und die farbige Flüssigkeit dringt in das Garn ein und sickert nach unten. Dann den Ofen abstellen, aber nicht öffnen, sondern Garn in der geschlossenen Form langsam abkühlen lassen bis alles Zimmertemperatur hat. Ruhig über Nacht stehen lassen, aber mindestens zwei Stunden.
Place in the cold oven and heat it to 100 degrees Celsius. When this temperature is reached, let the oven run for 20 minutes. Very important: do not remove the lid and do not open the oven at all! The ice cubes now melt slowly and the coloured liquid penetrates the yarn and seeps down. After 20 minutes turn off the oven, but do not open it. Let the yarn cool slowly in the closed form until everything is at room temperature. Perhaps let it stand overnight, but at least two hours.
Wer nicht im kalten Norddeutschland, sondern in wärmeren Gegenden wohnt, kann den Deckel auf die Form geben und für mehrere Stunden nach draußen in die Sonne stellen und "backen" lassen.
If you do not live in cold Northern Germany, but in warmer areas, you can put the lid on the form and leave it outside in the sun for several hours to "bake".
Die Wärme sorgt einerseits für die Verteilung der Farbe durch das Schmelzen lassen des Eises, andererseits wird die Farbe damit auch 'fixiert'.
The heat ensures on the one hand the distribution of the colour by letting the ice melt, on the other hand the colour is also 'fixed'.
Schritt 4 / Step 4
Schüssel aus dem Ofen nehmen Deckel abnehmen und das Ergebnis bewundern :) Unten in der Form wird restliche Flüssigkeit stehen, sie sollte fast klar sein. Garn herausnehmen, gut ausspülen, leicht ausdrücken oder in ein Handtuch wickeln oder auch mit der Salatschleuder Feuchtigkeit aus dem Garn holen. Dann zum Trocknen aufhängen und hinterher wieder bewundern. Gerne mit dem Ergebnis etwas angeben ;)
Take the bowl out of the oven. Remove the lid and admire the result :) At the bottom of the mould there will be residual liquid, it should be almost clear. Take out the yarn, rinse it well, squeeze it lightly or wrap it in a towel or use the salad spinner to get moisture out of the yarn. Then hang it up to dry and admire it again afterwards. Brag about it ;)

Eine andere Methode ist es, klare Eiswürfel oder Crushed Ice oder auch Schnee in einer dicken Schicht auf das Garn zu legen und die Farbe, entweder in Pulverform oder in zähflüssiger Lösung, darüber zu geben. Dann wie beschrieben in den Ofen schieben.
Another method is to place normal ice cubes or crushed ice or even snow in a thick layer on the yarn and to add the colour over it, either in powder form or in a viscous solution. Then put it in the oven as described.

Oh gooooooood, the itch to dye yarn is getting more intense by the minute. Your result is lovely, I love that there are still undyed parts, so that the colors pop even more. Which kind of yarn did you use? Is it superwash treated?
It's Lang Yarn Super Soxx sports weight sock yarn - superwash and soooo soft. The softest "basic" sock yarn ever.

Wow! Amazing result. I wanna try this on cotton yarn, can it be? @muscara I will just sun dry I do not have an oven.
The results won't be so intense. With the red dyeing last week I put in scraps of different fibers: right is merino wool, left is cotton/linen. You clearly see the difference.
But perhaps there are colours for cotton available? Her you get a powdered stuff that is meant for dyeing in the washing machine. We used it a lot clothing when the black had changed to grey or for making curtains out of old bed linens.
Search the internet for videos or blog posts in your language - there probably is something, you just have to try what words to use in the search :)

An interesting way to dye yarn. .. never did that
I love that you can use something as simple as food colouring to dye fabric. This would be a great way to use up old stocks you might have that aren't the best for using in food any more.
