WHAT DID I CROCHET?🧶#27|Ruffle Socks

Hi, beautiful people of Hive! This is my first post of the year so I’ll use this opportunity to wish you all an amazing 2025.

I made something uncommon — crochet ruffled socks! The story behind this project is that I’ve actually planned to make it a long time ago but kept putting it off. The first time I came across a picture of them, it was on Pinterest and I was blown away — honestly! The picture of the socks with the ruffles was a mix of cuteness and practicality. I mean, who doesn’t want to wear something that looks good and also serves its purpose? I’m a socks girlie through and through although I don’t wear socks as much as I’d love to because of the weather here, but of course I’d want to make one for those days when it’s not too hot to wear one.

I used a 3.5mm hook and 40g lilac yarn. I began with a magic ring of 10 half double crochets — I was going to work with half double crochet. I increases in the second row and third bringing me to 30 stitches in the third row. I stopped increasing when the circle could cover my big toe and the next two toes. That was in row 3. From then on, I simply half double crocheted round the work till it reached just before my ankle.

At this point, I was to start the heel which should be 2/3rd of the round. After calculating, it was 20 out of the 30 stitches. Normally, I’d chain 1 and turn my work when I reach the 20th stitch so I can crochet the other way, but it would look different from the half double crochet that was worked in the round and I didn’t want that. What I did then was to fasten off my yarn and cut it of, then start crocheting from the first stitch again.

I did this for 7 rows before I reached the end/back of my heel. Next, I folded it into 2 inside out and joined the two parts together by crocheting along the top. That formed the hole in the sock where the foot would go in when I turned it to the right side.

At this point, I was almost done with the socks. I simply half double crocheted around the hole to make it neat before proceeding with my ruffles. To make my ruffles, I did 4 double crochets in each stitch around. I didn’t want to make my ruffles too big for my first socks (maybe for the next socks I’d do), so I only did 1 row of ruffles. Voila, my ruffle sock was complete! I proceeded to make the second sock to complete the pair. In no time, I was done because I was already used to the process from the first sock.

I couldn’t wait to try them on.

They surely do look better with feet in them! Funny that they remind me of Peter Pan’s shoes😂. The next pair I make would have more ruffles to switch things up.

What colour would you make yours in?
