Needlework Monday - Beaded Tapestry

Lately I've been thinking of making a large wall art, like a tapestry with beads. Of course, there are many techniques out there, especially the embroidery type. But I always like unusual things and I'm thinking of a whole beaded tapestry using peyote stitch! I know, it is a very ambitious project, but I am up to the challenge. I like to learn new things.

Before I even plan a large size tapestry, I must make a sample to see how it goes, what is the process and if I can actually do it.

So I decided to make a sample with 11/0 seed beads that I have in my stash. I chose a cute landscape photo and I put together the beads, sorted by colors. I am doing a free hand piece, I don't need a pattern for that. Honestly, I think is very difficult to follow a pattern in peyote stitch ... my opinion....

BTW ... this is the piece that I am talking about. It's supposed to be a sunset over some green hills, a river and sky.

And here are some photos of the steps I took in creating this little sample. I used various colors, it was fun interchanging them. In the end I did some embellishments on the sun, to bring it out. And finally I finished the edged with a scallop stitch with smaller size beads.

Now my little sample hangs on the wall and it became my 3 year old grandson's favorite piece. He likes the way it feels in his little hands.

Well... what I learned from this: I must plan carefully for the larger tapestry, because it needs many seed beads and high quality thread, so it is an expansive project. Then I will need a cool photo, possibly geometric design, because I can not follow a pattern in this stitch. Period. LOL
