I have gotten this fabric so that I can sew it for my mother-in-law's funeral. She died last year, and she was already buried, but we haven't done a proper ceremony. In my tribe, this is what we do, particularly when the person who dies is of age. People come together to celebrate the demise. We often call it befitting burial with the belief that the death would meet his or her maker in one piece.
I got the materials for the clothing yesterday and began the cuttings in part before the commencement of the sewing.
Below is the list of materials used.
Lace fabric
Tafetta
Dull face
Zip
Matching thread
Trimmings
Beads
Needle.
Bra cup
Measurement used:
Burst:33
Under burst:28
Half length: 16
Full length:57
Waist:28
Hip:39
R/ S:5.5
Sleeve L: 16.
Cutting of the fabric
Step 1:
The front part of the skirt was cut first with the measurements of waist 28 and hip 39, using 41 as the length.
Step 2:
I fold the fabric into two, then place the front part on it to cut out the A-line cut together with the tail, and add an extra 8 inches at the bottom part to bring out the shape of the tail. Since the back must be longer than the front,
Step 3:
I used my burst 33 divided by 4 + 5-inch seam allowances to fold my fabric for the cutting of the upper front bodice.
On the folded fabric, I measured the neck region, the shoulder part, the waist, the burst, the underburst, and the waist, all divided by 4 with seam allowance.
Step 4:
I followed it up by folding the fabric again into two. I placed the front bodice on it, leaving 1.5 zipper allowance, and I used the front part to cut the back bodice.
Step 5:
The type of sleeve I used for this dress is a basic sleeve that is easy to cut.
I fold my fabric into 4 and mark the armhole, the desired length, and the round sleeve, and then I cut it out. After cutting it out, I have my sleeves for both arms.
Sewing method
The two pieces of the front bodice were sewn together and turned with a lining to give it a neat finishing. The same goes with the back bodice turned as well with a lining.
Step 2:
The front and back pieces are joined together at the shoulder for neat finishing and joined at both sides to have a half-length blouse that is 15 inches by length after joining the back and the front together.
Step 3:
The half-length bodice is joined to the skirt to make a full gown.
Step 4:
The zip was sewn on the zip allowance from the neck part of the half-length to the hip part of the dress.
Step 5:
A basic sleeve cutout is attached to the armhole to make a complete A-line cut together with a tail-long dress with a basic sleeve embellished with bead fringe.
Step 6: The sleeve is embellished with a short beaded fringe.
If you check the picture of the materials posted to be used, you can see that they contain crinoline and boning, which I eventually did not use. I later realised the fabric to be used for the structured sleeve did not match well with the fabric,so I resolved to use a basic elbow sleeve and embellish it with a short bead fringe.
Isn’t that lovely?
The dress could be worn to a wedding party, funeral, or any other social gathering.
