Work Holiday

I am on holidays from work since Thursday, so it has been a perfect opportunity to make a start on some much needed DIY. We bought our new house last year and as with any non new build house, there are always some things that are not to your taste. I have been busy over the nine months since we bought it and some projects so far include:

Repaint house and garage exterior, which needed three coats.
Paint the conservatory.
Paint downstairs
bathroom.
Paint upstairs bathroom.
Change out integrated lights in kitchen.

Latest Project

Our sitting was absolutely fine, but was a pretty plain colour and the light fittings were dated. So I decided on Friday that I was going to sort it out this weekend. I did all of the prep on Friday, by masking taping skirting boards etc, taking down curtains and emptying everything out of the room. This is the colour my wife picked out:

These are the light fittings we bought a few months ago, yep this one has been on the long finger for a good while!

One minor problem though! These are LED lights and our old lights had a dimmer switch which are not compatible with LED lights.

That meant a trip to B and Q to buy a new double switch, but that turned out well as I bought something else too, more on that later.

How's it looking

Here are some photos of the room so far, all walls have had three coats of paint and the new light fittings are up.

Out with the old

I told you they were old fashioned didn't I! We are delighted with the upgrade.

Inside Plants

So my wife and I have had a battle of wills for a while now about indoor plants. I like them, but she doesn't. She doesn't like having to dust them, but for me some greenery inside negates any hassles.

This weekend was my perfect opportunity to get them, as I'd spent all day Saturday painting and changing light fittings in the sitting room, so when I was in B and Q earlier I bought these and I'm delighted with them.

What do you think about indoor plants? Are you for against them?

Phase 2

Next up I will be painting the fireplace and shelving unit a slightly different shade of grey. We will also be buying a new suite of furniture and I'll be finding a home for my indoor plants.

The make over looks really great, especially the lights, so stylish. And I love the windows, much nicer than the big standard white uPVC ones.

As for indoor plants, I think they are necessary to add some life to the room, it makes so much difference. And everywhere else on the room collects dust anyway. Today I showed my sister a photo of my new living room and the first thing she said was it lacked green. Then my brother in law gave me a rubber plant as he got so many at home. It's surprising how much difference it makes now!

Hey there, thanks a mil, really happy with how it's turned out so far, I've remove the masking tape now and put curtains back up and put furniture back in and it's really starting to take shape.

Ya for me indoor plants are essential too and my wife actually loves the new plant in the sitting room now, so I think I'll start adding them elsewhere now too 😁

Love the colour. Fucking hate painting. I'm terrible at it.

Ha ha, ya I'm no fan of painting myself! The prep is often the worst, taping everything up and all that. Delighted now that it's done though, nice sense of accomplishment after it.

Good old Easter holidays always involve a bit of DIY. I've just finished laying a patio in our back garden. I'm absolutely knackered! Can't wait to get back to work!

That needs to be a post.

Well wear man, looking forward yo seeing a post on your handiwork if ya do one. I'm pure tired now too, but am off to Canaries for a long weekend with the lads on Wednesday, so not doing too bad overall!

Ah nice one!

Yes, I'll post some pictures of the finished job later in the week for yourself and @nathen007

Love the colour, it sets off those gorgeous windows and unpainted skirting perfectly! I knew there would be a whole new suite of furniture to follow lol....Painting is always only the start....

Nice to see things going so well and best wishes to you and your crafty, colour concsious wife. We look forward to the new three piece suite post in the not too distant future.

Ha ha, I had been putting of the suite of furniture by saying I didn't want to damage them with paint etc, no excuses now though, so will be ordering next week! 😁

She did well with the colour, it's turned out really nice and by doing all the labour, I've set aside some funds to buy some art we both like, which will be delivered next week 😀
