We have arrived at the very exciting point in our building process where things are taking shape. What has been only a footprint of a house is actually starting to look like a house thanks to the progress we have made with the wood frame over the past two weeks.
We bought this land two and a half years ago and have been working every week (and often, everyday) to transform this little patch of woods into a cabin in the woods.
Mostly I have documented the work we have done on the earthen workshop that stands just besides the fledgling wood frame. By comparison it is pretty wild how quickly a projects can move when building with wood as opposed to cob.
The walls of this house will be made of earthen materials too. But, for the sake of getting the project moving we have decided to work with an experience builder who helped up get this wood frame in place in just a few days scattered over the course of the last few weeks.
Now we are here. The main structure of the house is in the place and a part of the foundation too. There is so much left to do; the rest of the roof will be going up over the next week or so and tons of wood needs to be added to the frame before we can begin filling it in with cob. Still, I am so proud of the progress we have made and feel so encouraged that our house is starting to take shape.
Here is a big pile of wood that will make up the interior of the roof. This is the part that we will see from the inside and, along with insulation will help keep the house thermic and soften the sound of rain falling on the metal roof.
In between building sessions we have been spending our free moments staining the wood to keep it resistant to insects. We ended up choosing three different tones of stain and will make a decorative pattern with the wood.
Here the wood sits while my partner and the builder installed the beams that make up the roof. When clouds filled the sky we covered up the wood with a tarp and kept working anyway. I myself kept to ground level and worked on the final layers of plastering in our earthen workshop.
Really soon I plan to make a video about the process of plastering the workshop using a lime-sand mixture. For now I leave you with the picture I took a few days ago of the finished exterior.
Happy building everyone!
Building requires a lot.
Getting a professional involved is a great step to progress.
See how far you have gone.
