A few days ago I commented that my daughter started her preschool class. As a DIY mom I love to personalize her school supplies, make her bags, even some hair accessories. This time I made the pencil case because the teacher told me that she needed the child to be able to open and close it according to the Montessori Method that they apply in the institution, which consists in making the child feel free and independent.
So I decided to make her a pencil case from recycled material, where I was able to save between 10 and 20$, I personalized it and it was fun to be able to make something for my daughter.
We started by gathering the materials. We need a plastic bottle (it can be a soda or mineral water bottle), a piece of thick fabric (I used white jeans), markers, thread and needle, pencil, tassel lace, Chinese thread and plastic charms. As for the tools to be used: silicone gun, scissors, gas lighter and cutter.
Hace unos días comenté que mi hija comenzó clase en el preescolar maternal. Como una mamá DIY me encanta personalizar sus útiles escolares, hacer sus bolsos, incluso algunos accesorios para el cabello. Esta vez hice la cartuchera ya que la profesora me comentó que necesitaba que la niña pudiera abrirla y cerrarla según el Método Montessori que aplican en la institución que consiste en que el niño se sienta libre e independiente.
Por eso decidí hacerle una cartuchera de material reciclado, donde pude ahorrar entre 10 y 20$, se la personalicé y fue divertido poder hacer algo para mi hija.
Comenzamos juntando los materiales. Necesitamos una botella de plástico (puede ser de refresco o de agua mineral), un trozo de tela gruesa (yo utilicé un jeans blanco), marcadores, hilo y aguja, lápiz ,encaje de borlas, hilo chino y dijes de plástico. En cuanto a las herramientas que vanos a utilizar: pistola de silicón, tijera, encendedor a gas y cutter.
We take the bottle and with the cutter we remove the upper part where the cap fits.
Tomamos la botella y con el cutter retiramos la parte superior donde encaja la tapa.
We cut the fabric in a rectangle that covers the bottle and there are 5 centimeters more upwards to make the tie with the Chinese thread.
Cortamos la tela en un rectángulo que cubra la botella y queden 5 centímetros más hacia arriba para hacer el amarre con el hilo chino.
I used the edge of the recycled trouser seams to save time. And I gave it a little stitching to bind the fabric together to make it sturdy.
Utilicé el borde de las costuras del pantalón reciclado para ahorrar tiempo. Y le di una pequeña costura para unir la tela y que quedara resistente.
With the hot silicone gun, I applied silicone on the edges of the bottle and glued the fabric with the help of the back of the scissors.
Con la pistola de silicón bien caliente, apliqué silicona en los bordes de la botella y fui pegando la tela con ayuda de la parte trasera de la tijera.
To cover the joint between the bottle and the fabric, I glued the tassel lace all around the edge. With the lighter I burned the ends of the lace so that it would not fray.
Para tapar la unión de la botella y la tela, pegué el encaje de borlas por todo el borde. Con el encendedor quemé las puntas del encaje para que no se deshilache.
With the markers I made the face of a little cat, my daughter loves cats, and I also added little cat footprints.
Con los marcadores hice la cara de un garito, mi hija ama los gatos, y también agregué huellitas de gato.

For the closure part. My daughter's teacher told me that she needed a pencil case that was easy to access for a 3 year old, so I thought of putting a string through it and making a sliding knot like the one for bracelets.
I opened a few small eyelets with the scissors and attached the charms to the ends of the Chinese thread. Then I burned the ends of the thread to make them secure.
I passed the thread through the eyelets and burned the excess with the lighter. I placed the other charm and that was it.
Para la parte del cierre. La profesora de mi hija me dijo que necesitaba una cartuchera que fuera de fácil acceso para un niño de 3 años, entonces se me ocurrió pasarle un cordón y hacer un nudo corredizo como el de las pulseras.
Abrí unos pequeños ojales con la tijera y en los extremos del hilo chino sujeté los dijes. Luego quemé las puntas del hilo para que quedaran seguros.
Pasé el hilo por los ojales y quemé el exceso con el encendedor. Coloqué el otro dije y listo.
This is how this beautiful pencil case turned out, where not only my daughter keeps her wooden colors and pencils, but also a pencil sharpener with reservoir and an eraser. It has enough space and is personalized.

Así quedó esta bella cartuchera, donde no solamente mi hija guarda los colores de madera y sus lápices, tambien puede guardar un sacapuntas con depósito y una goma de borrar. Tiene suficiente espacio y es personalizada.
