Splinterlands is a game from the blockchain Hive that has a lot of cards with very varied and colorful, as well as unique and interesting characters, each with a story behind. Precisely today I share a drawing inspired by one of these characters called "Coastal Sentry". It is a character that I wanted to draw, because I am very attracted to mermaids, so I wanted to try and this was the result. Below you can see a drawing and the card I was inspired by.
Me encanta hacer arte inspirado en Splinterlands, porque hay muchas opciones de donde inspirarse. Splinterlands es un juego de la blockchain Hive que tiene un montón de cartas con personajes muy variados y coloridos, además de únicos e interesantes, cada uno con una historia detrás. Por eso es genial usar el arte del juego para crear dibujos, esculturas, entre otras cosas.

Precisamente hoy comparto un dibujo inspirado en uno de estos personajes llamado "Coastal Sentry". Es un personaje que quería dibujar, porque me llaman mucho la atención las sirenas, así que quise intentarlo y este fue el resultado. Abajo pueden ver un dibujo y la carta en la que me inspiré.

Step by step
Now I will show you the step by step of this drawing, which I made on a white sheet of paper, one of those that you can find in any stationery store or bookstore.
Paso a paso
Ahora les mostraré el paso a paso de este dibujo, el cual hice en una hoja blanca tamaño carta, de las que puedes encontrar en cualquier papelería o librería.
I made the first strokes of the drawing very thin, trying not to leave them so marked for the moment when it would be necessary to erase these first strokes and make the final outline.
Los primeros trazos del dibujo los hice muy delgados, tratando de que no quedaran tan marcados para el momento en que fuese necesario borrar estos primeros trazos y hacer el delineado final.

This is how I started to do the outlining, making the lines with more pressure with the pencil on the paper, trying to get a better finish and firmness.
Así fue como comencé a hacer el delineado, haciendo las líneas con más presión con el lápiz sobre el papel, procurando un mejor acabado y firmeza.

I had a hard time making these lines because they are all very thin and with well-defined curves, so sometimes you have to erase a few times, so you have to make smooth strokes to know well where you are going to make the final strokes, as these are easier to erase if you make a mistake.
Me costó mucho hacer estas líneas pues son todas muy finas y con curvas bien definidas, así que a veces toca borrar unas cuántas veces, por eso hay que hacer trazos suaves para saber bien dónde van a hacer os trazos finales, pues estos son más fáciles de borrar si se equivocan.
For the hair I did a lot of curved lines to create a sort of curly hair. Again I made thin lines so that it would be easy to erase in case I made a mistake and believe me, I make a lot of mistakes.
So, I continued to do line after line until I covered the entire hair area with each of these lines.
Para el cabello hice un montón de líneas curvas para crear una suerte de cabello rizado. Nuevamente hice líneas delgadas para que fuese fácil borrar en caso de equivocarme y créeme, me equivoco mucho.
Así pues, continué haciendo línea tras línea hasta cubrir toda el área del cabello con cada una de estas líneas.
Regarding the face, it was the first thing I started to define. First I did the eyebrows to get an idea of where I would place the eyes, I did some lines on the nose and mouth that served as a guide and then I continued drawing eyes and mouth.
Con respecto al rostro, fue lo primero que empecé a definir. Primero hice las cejas para tener una idea de en dónde colocaría los ojos, hice unas líneas en la nariz y la boca que me sirvieron como guía y entonces continué dibujando ojos y boca.

Finally I added shadows and colored the black areas such as the eyes, lips and nose.
It is worth mentioning that this should be done only when you already have the face well defined, because it is really difficult to erase these dark shades and the shading.
Finalmente agregué sombras y coloreé las áreas negras como los ojos, los labios y la nariz.
Cabe destacar que esto hay que hacerlo solo cuando ya tienes bien definido el rostro, pues es realmente difícil borrar estas tonalidades oscuras y el sombreado.
Next was to work with the body. Although the final outline was ready, I had a lot of details to add to the feminine figure of this mermaid, so I started to cover the breasts with that kind of suit that you can see in the card.
I also made that kind of skirt that she has at the waist and added details that can be seen in the tail.
Lo siguiente fue trabajar con el cuerpo. Aunque ya estaba listo el delineado final, tenía muchos detalles que agregar a la figura femenina de esta sirena, así que empecé a cubrir los pechos con esa suerte de traje que se ve en la carta.
También hice esa especie de falda que tiene en la cintura y agregué detalles que se aprecian en la cola.

Once these areas were drawn, I started adding shadows and more details along the body, such as fins, gills and so on. In the couple of pictures below you can see how I started to darken the garment covering the breasts.
Una vez dibujadas estas áreas, comencé a agregar sombras y más detalles a lo largo del cuerpo, como aletas, branquias y demás. En el par de fotos de abajo pueden observar cómo comencé a oscurecer la prenda que cubre los pechos.

Below you can also see how I darkened the skirt I already mentioned and the tail area, where I used different grayscales to differentiate one thing from the other, so everything would have color, shadow and depth even though it was all done in black and white.
A continuación también pueden ver cómo oscurecí la falda que ya mencioné y el área de la cola, donde usé distintas escalas de grises para diferenciar una cosa de la otra, así todo tendría un color, sombra y profundidad a pesar de estar hecho todo en blanco y negro.

The last thing I did was to add my username to the drawing...

This is how this drawing inspired by one of the Splinterlands cards was finished.
De esta manera quedó terminado este dibujo inspirado en una de las cartas de Splinterlands.
However, that was not all, because I decided to add a little color, as I have done with other drawings.
Although black and white has a certain charm and mysticism, it is interesting to do that exercise and see how they look when painted and it certainly looks very different. I would even dare to say that the drawing looks a little more terrifying, at least when you look into his eyes.
Sin embargo, eso no fue todo, pues decidí agregar un poco de color, como bien he hecho con otros dibujos.
Aunque a blanco y negro tiene cierto encanto y misticismo, es interesante hacer ese ejercicio y ver cómo quedan cuando se pintan y ciertamente se ve muy distinto. Incluso, me atrevería a decir que el dibujo se ve un poco más aterrador, al menos cuando se le mira a los ojos.
