DIY Recycled Antique Pumpkin Truck

in Hive Diy4 months ago (edited)

When my daughter was a baby, she ate a lot of baby food pouches and I saved tons of the green caps. However, I rarely used them for any crafts. Lately, she's been eating apple sauce pouches with orange caps, and they look just like tiny pumpkins. We also have a bunch of yellow ones, too. I figured now is the perfect time to use the orange caps, so I decided to create a vintage truck out of cardboard from an old box. I used the yellow caps as wheels, and then filled the back of the pickup truck with "pumpkins." I figured this could be turned into some kind of game, or even a reward system for kids. Check out the steps below to see how I made the antique pickup truck filled with pumpkins.

Materials:

  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Black marker
  • Orange pouch caps (and other colors for the wheels)
  • Green floral wire
  • Wire cutters

Step 1. I drew out how I wanted the truck to look and the amount of shapes I needed.

Step 2. I drew shapes for one side of the truck with pencil. Then I traced over them with black marker.

Step 3. I cut the shapes out with scissors.

Step 4. I traced the shapes from Step 2 onto a different piece of cardboard and cut them out. I used black marker to draw the same outlines on the opposite side.

Step 5. I glued the bottom of the truck to one side of the truck. Then I glued the other side. After that, I glued on the front part between the headlights.

The wheels

Step 6. I glued on the wheel panels and yellow wheels.

Step 7. I found a piece of bendable cardboard to make the windshield and cabin area, so that the back resembled a truck bed.

Step 8. I used the width of the truck to measure and draw a rectangle for the tailgate. Then I glued it on the back.

Step 9. I looped some green floral wire through the bottom of the cap to ensure it would stay on.

Step 10. I used a straw to coil the wire.

Step 11. I placed all the pumpkin caps into the back of the pickup truck.

This truck looks great. It would pass very nicely for a school project. Nice work.
