It's been really cold all week during my daughter's winter break from school, so I've been amping up the indoor DIY projects. Today we decided to make our own slime with glue, baking soda, and contact lens solution. My daughter wanted to make red slime, since that is her favorite color. She added a lot of food coloring, so it turned out bright red. I think the recipe I found online called for too little baking soda and contact solution, so I kept adding those until I found the right consistency for the slime. Even as an adult, I found the project to be an interesting chemistry experiment. The boric acid in the contact lens solution creates a unique texture for the glue mixture. Check out the steps below to see our process for making our own slime.
Materials:
- One bottle of Elmer's Glue (4 oz)
- Baking soda
- Contact solution
- Bowl/Container
- Spoon
- Food coloring
- Glitter (optional)
My contact solution was expired, and still worked.
Slime-Making Process:
Step 1. We added the whole 4 oz. bottle of Elmer's Glue to the container.
Step 2. We added about half a tablespoon of baking soda to the glue and stirred it together.
Step 3. We added about a tablespoon of eye contact solution and stirred it into the mixture.
Step 4. We added food coloring to the mixture and stirred.
Step 5. We added some red glitter to the slime and stirred.
Step 6. The slime was still way too sticky, so we continued to fold in small amounts of baking soda and contact solution until it was the right consistency.
We did it!

Interesting way to make it. I remember making Gak and it would require 20 Mule Team Borax
Gak 😆I miss that. I assume you were a 90s kid? Yes some of the recipes I saw mentioned people using Borax, but I think many people are using contact solution these days. They say basically anything with boric acid.
Yeah 🤪 I'm surprised to know the contact solution works. Very interesting
Wow that's great. You did a great job. The smile in her face is the best
