Let's Organize Art And Craft Supplies!

in Hive Diylast year

Hello DIYers! I think probably most of us who craft/sew/make art accumulate a lot of supplies, which can easily become quite disorganized. If you've seen my (admittedly rare) posts in The Minimalist group, you know I call myself the reformed hoarder, because I have been working on reducing my clutter for several years (and it used to be out of control). For craft supplies, I put a self-imposed moratorium on buying new supplies, with rare exception, like if I needed a particular part to complete a project. So I've been using up what I have.

I have finally gotten to the point where I've used up enough (I still have tons of fabric though, I need to get sewing, lol) of my craft and art supplies that I can really organize them! So that's what I did this week.

I should have taken "before" photos...

So I started off just trying to do something about the top of these plastic drawers, which had heavy things on top so it had bowed down in the middle. Ah, that totally escalated into a Make Chaos To Create Order level of organizing.

tearing it apart

moving on to the craft dresser

found a pattern that had slipped behind and underneath the drawer where patterns were kept that got torn like this. oops!

But finally, I got that dresser organized, and moved arty-crafty supplies into the plastic drawers, so that now the dresser is all fabric-crafty type stuff (they had been mixed together before).

oh did I mention I ended up rearranging furniture? because I rearranged furniture

I got this printer for free off of fb marketplace! Part of me cleaning off the plastic drawers and trying to figure something out was because I didn't think they could handle the weight if I put the printer on them, since it's pretty heavy. So now the dresser is over here because it's wood and is sturdy

Yeah and then I started organizing the metal cart, which also had art stuff in it. Here's the paint shelf. I organized the whole cart, got some of the heavy things that had been on top of the plastic drawers into it (read: craft magazines I had kept for instructions), and also cleaned up my desk.

So there was my craft organizing spree I went on this week. I still have some stuff to clean up in the living room, but most of it is done! Huzzah!

How do you organize your craft supplies? Or are they chaos? I think it will help me to use what I have now that I have a better idea of what's there.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!

Sort:

Organising my craft supplies is one of my hobbies 😂.

I've got a pretty good system since I did my two Finish It Februarys. A lot of things either got finished or moved on, and everything got sorted out! I bought a new little trolley for here which comes with a wooden cover for the top tray and is on wheels (with brakes). I've got all my current project and equipment like needles on it, I can move it around to wherever I'm sitting ... or out of the way, and the top takes the iPad and a cup of tea.

I have a nice sort out once a week or so, bringing out new things I want to work on and putting away anything that's finished or I'm bored with.

I was talking about your clean with me videos yesterday 😍

Lovely job of sorting out those drawers and finding a place for the printer.

Having craft organised is a MUST for me, otherwise it loses its appeal and can feel overwhelming.
My husband has a green trunk just like yours (in the last photo). He bought it in America many years ago, and I don't know what it would take for him to part with it :)

Hahahaha. That trunk is allllllllllll fabric stash (and there is more fabric than that, lol). It used to be yarn stash (and there was more yarn than that... ), but I have successfully used a ton of my yarn so now there is only one much smaller container for yarn stash. :)

They are useful, for sure. He also has 2 black ones like it. They were too big for the narrowboat and he had to store them.
Maybe our next boat will be big enough and they will be handy:)
