This is what is used in Russia in replace of the stolen manhole cover.
Stealing iron cast covers is widespread in the country and an unresolved safety + economic + police-inefficiency issue. Thefts sell them as metal scrap for cheap prices.
So that is not an actual replace, but a kind of a fence, a light frame welded of PVC pipes and painted in the warning colors.

That must be frustrating to see happening everywhere! With the snow potentially covering up an exposed hole, very dangerous too. The DIY solutions are fantastic, I think the wooden tripod tied in the middle is probably the best. Easy to see from a distance and sturdy. Not able to be stepped on.
