Primero que nada, déjame aclararte que no soy manualista ni costurera, es algo que no se me da muy bien. Sin embargo, cuando se trata de que mis hijos deben cumplir con una actividad escolar o cualquiera que tengan, siempre me pongo ingeniosa y logro que queden satisfechos con el resultado y cumplan con su actividad.
Suelo ayudar a mis hijos con láminas, maquetas, trajes y estas cosas que suelen pedir en las escuelas. Lo hago con mucho gusto cuando se trata de ellos y en esta ocasión no podía quedarme atrás. Mi hijo Diego iba a participar por primera vez en un desfile de carnaval escolar.

I do it with pleasure when it comes to them and on this occasion I could not stay behind. Así que, sin saber qué hacer y teniendo un presupuesto muy limitado, en mi mente fui construyendo el traje, que fuese fácil de hacer y de utilizar. Así que utilicé varias cosas que ya tenía en casa y para los colores decidí utilizar papel crepé porque era lo que tenía más accesible al momento. Aunque después me di cuenta de que no fue buena elección del todo.
Lo primero era hacer una especie de capa que simulara las alas y él fácilmente pudiera abrirlas y cerrarlas sin que le pesaran. Así que recordé la cenefa de una cortina que ya no usó y la tenía guardada, la agarré y la piqué por la mitad, sirviéndome que estaba perfecta para lo que quería hacer. Así que agarré una franelita de color rojo que ya teníamos y le cocí la cenefa encima, haciendo una sola pieza.
Lo segundo fue tener muchos colores y para esto decidí utilizar papel crepé en varios colores, como el del pájaro original. No pude salir a comprar la tela, así que opté por esta opción.

So I used several things I already had at home and for the colors I decided to use crepe paper because it was what I had more accessible at the moment. Although later I realized that it was not a good choice at all.
The first thing was to make a kind of cape that would simulate the wings and he could easily open and close them without weighing them down. So I remembered the valance of a curtain that he no longer used and had in storage, grabbed it and cut it in half, realizing that it was perfect for what I wanted to do. So I grabbed a red flannelette that we already had and sewed the border on top of it, making one piece.
The second thing was to have lots of colors and for this I decided to use crepe paper in various colors, like the original bird. I couldn't go out to buy the fabric, so I opted for this option.
Lo primero que hice con el papel fue cortarlo en pedazos donde pudiera hacer cortes simulando las alas, así lo hice con todos los colores del papel crepé. También le cocí con una cinta roja un agarradero que él pudiera colocárselo en su manito y estirar más las alas.
Después, lo que más trabajo me dio fue forrar con papel crepé de color rojo una hilera completa que cubriera la parte de atrás completa y el frente de lo que serían sus alas. Yo quería que el plumaje se le viera en ambas partes.
Hice este color por color hasta cubrir todos los espacios de la tela. Después, esa camiseta roja de mi hijo la fui llenando de plumas también por el frente, cubriéndola en su totalidad. Agarré un pantalón de color rojo y le puse algunos pedazos de papel crepé simulando plumas en varios lugares para hacer un traje completo.

Then, the hardest part was to line with red crepe paper a full row that covered the entire back and the front of what would be his wings. I wanted the feathers to show on both sides.
I did this color by color until all the spaces in the fabric were covered. Then, I filled the front of my son's red T-shirt with feathers, covering it completely. I took a pair of red pants and put some pieces of crepe paper simulating feathers in several places to make a complete costume.
Tenía la duda de cómo hacerle las patas del pájaro, así que se me ocurrió colocarle a sus cholitas unos dedos en foami simulando las patas y le coloqué uñas y para la cara, terminé haciéndole una máscara de pájaro.
Para esto utilicé unos lentes que me habían quedado de las mascarillas del covid y así sería fácil de ponérsela y se la podía subir como unos lentes hacia la cabeza sin problemas.
A esta le hice la base en foami, le calculé las distancias de los ojos y la fijé en los lentes, después la forré con el mismo color de papel crepé del traje, le hice algunos detalles con marcador negro en los ojos y finalmente le hice un pico con foami y se lo pegué.

For this I used some glasses that I had left over from the covid masks so it would be easy to put it on and I could raise it up to the head like glasses without any problems.
I made the base in foami, calculated the distances of the eyes and fixed it on the glasses, then I lined it with the same color crepe paper of the costume, I made some details with black marker in the eyes and finally I made a beak with foami and glued it.
Duré varios días haciéndolo el traje porque todo fue cosido a mano y el papel crepé resultó ser muy delicado. Algo que no tomé en cuenta al principio. Lo cierto fue que el traje estuvo listo para el día del desfile y mi hijo estaba muy contento con su traje.
A cada rato me decía que le gustaba mucho, me daba las gracias y se lo enseñaba a sus amigos diciendo que se lo había hecho su mamá. Él estaba feliz, participé contento en su actividad y esa fue mi mayor satisfacción. Espero que mi idea te sea de utilidad. Lo que sí te recomiendo en un caso como este es que utilices tela, si quieres que te dure para otras actividades. En nuestro caso solo era para eso y se cumplió el objetivo.

It took me several days to make the suit because everything was sewn by hand and the crepe paper turned out to be very delicate. Something I didn't take into account at the beginning. The truth was that the suit was ready for the day of the parade and my son was very happy with his suit.
He kept telling me how much he liked it, thanking me and showing it to his friends saying that his mom had made it for him. He was happy, I participated happily in his activity and that was my greatest satisfaction. I hope you find my idea useful. What I do recommend in a case like this is to use fabric if you want it to last for other activities. In our case it was just for that and the objective was achieved.
