Genus Mylaris | March 17 2025 | Buket Alue Puteh, Aceh, Indonesia |

This is the Genus Mylaris which is included in the family tenebrionidae, a large family of insects that are generally known as "darkling bettles", beetles in this family have an important role in the ecosystem as decomposers, these beetles have a role that is not much different from fungi where the Genus Mylaris carries out the process of decomposing various organic materials and especially dead wood, although the Genus Mylaris is not as popular as other insects from the tenebrionidae family, the existence of these insects remains interesting to study, especially in relation to their habitat, behavior and important role in the ecosystem.
I found these beetles on a pile of rotten wood and actually I found them accidentally when I was cleaning some parts in the corner of the garden, this finding actually surprised me a little because I never expected to find insects of the Genus Mylaris in large numbers, there I noticed some parts of the dead wood had many holes the size of their bodies and that showed that the traces were bite marks from insects of the Genus Mylaris that feed on sawdust as their main food, and their existence at the very bottom of the pile of wood is very interesting to understand because they seem to live their lives in a dark space that seems not to expect light at all, besides that they are also safe from attacks by predators such as insect-eating birds and so on.
