A gourd refers to a family of hard-shelled fruits that belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes pumpkins, squashes, melons, and cucumbers. Gourds come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors and are usually classified into edible and non-edible types. While some gourds can be eaten (like certain squashes and pumpkins), others are mainly decorative or used as tools.

The inedible varieties are often dried and used as decorations, containers, birdhouses, or musical instruments due to their durable, hollow shells. Gourds have been cultivated for thousands of years and hold cultural significance in various parts of the world.
