This time I want to tell you about one of the exotic animals of Sumatra, namely the Bearcat, or the local name Binturong (Arctictis binturong). This species is a unique and rare mammal that lives in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including in Sumatra. Although the name "bearcat" seems to combine "bear" and "cat", binturong is actually more closely related to civets. It has a large body with thick black fur and a long, gripping tail, making it an expert in life in the trees.

Binturong has a body up to one meter long and can weigh around 15 kilograms. Its strong tail functions as a "fifth hand" when swinging on tree branches. Another unique feature is the distinctive smell of binturong which resembles the aroma of buttered popcorn! This smell is produced by glands under its tail, which it uses to mark territory or attract mates.

As an omnivore, binturong eats fruits, especially figs, as well as insects, small birds, and other small mammals. By eating fruit, binturong helps spread seeds in the forest, which plays an important role in forest regeneration. It is also part of the food chain that maintains the balance of the forest ecosystem.

Binturong is currently threatened by hunting and habitat loss due to deforestation. Much of the forest that is its home has been cleared for plantations or settlements. In addition, binturong are also often captured to be kept as illegal pets or traded on the black market, which adds pressure to its population.
