Today I share with you another one of my creations and this time it was the turn of the grass type dragons Verdion and Verdarox. And yes, I know I put Verdion in the title, but the more I look at the drawing, the harder it is for me to decide which one looks more like it. If you can, let me know in the comments your opinion.
I feel that connoisseurs of Mexican popular culture might find an uncanny resemblance between my fan art and an alebrije because of the bold colors I used. At least I see it that way. Luckily, I didn't keep adding more color combinations or I'd end up drawing one. Anyway, I'm quite happy with the result because I was able to apply some blurring techniques and watercolor style drawing in the background, something I don't usually use much, but this time I did.

Hoy les comparto otra de mis creaciones y en esta ocasión le tocó el turno a los dragones de tipo hierba Verdion y Verdarox. Y sí, ya sé que en el título puse que era Verdion, pero mientras más miro el dibujo, más me cuesta decidir a cuál de los dos se parece más. Si pueden, déjenme saber en los comentarios su opinión.
Siento que los conocedores de la cultura popular mexicana podrían encontrar un extraño parecido entre mi fan art y un alebrije por los colores llamativos que utilicé. Al menos yo lo veo así. Por suerte, no seguí agregándole más combinaciones de colores o terminaría dibujando uno. De todas formas, estoy bastante contento con el resultado porque pude aplicar algunas técnicas de difuminado y dibujo estilo acuarela en el fondo, cosa que no suelo emplear mucho, pero esta vez me animé y sí lo hice.
Step by step // Paso a paso
I begin by drawing the outline of the body of a lizard sitting and looking to the left. Next, I draw the tail and the elongated spines that cover the entire back of the body. I also take the opportunity to add the well marked facial features and a lower area that will serve as a floor.
Before continuing, I must apologize for the poor visibility of the lineart, since I forgot to increase the opacity of the feather brush. In the end I got some strokes that are only visible if you look at the image from the front. 😅
Empiezo dibujando el contorno del cuerpo de un lagarto sentado y mirando hacia la izquierda. Seguidamente, dibujo la cola y las espinas alargadas que cubren toda la parte trasera del cuerpo. Aprovecho también para agregar los rasgos faciales bien marcados y una área inferior que servirá como suelo.
Antes de continuar, debo disculparme por la poca visibilidad del lineart, ya que se me olvidó subir la opacidad del pincel pluma. Al final obtuve unos trazos que solo son visibles si se mira de frente la imagen. 😅

On top of the body, I will draw hundreds and hundreds of scales that are mainly concentrated on the limbs, back and face. I will mark the skin divisions on the abdomen and tail and then move on to the background. I drew the background in a new layer and chose a design of trees and bushes simple and inconspicuous that did not overshadow the protagonist of the drawing.
Encima del cuerpo, dibujaré cientos y cientos de escamas que se concentran principalmente en las extremidades, el dorso y la cara. Marcaré las divisiones de la piel en el abdomen y la cola para luego pasar al fondo. El fondo lo dibujé en una nueva capa y escogí un diseño de árboles y arbustos simples y poco llamativos que no opacasen al protagonista del dibujo.

Once I rectified and retouched the lineart, I went on to give the first layers of color. The body, for the most part, will be a mixture of yellow and green, forming a grass green. For the scales, I increased the amount of yellow in the mix to achieve a contrast with the skin. The dorsal barbs will be a beautiful pink and the belly area a dark blue-green, almost sea green.
Una vez rectifiqué y retoqué el lineart, pasé a dar las primeras capas de color. El cuerpo, en su mayoría, será de una mezcla de amarillo y verde, formando un verde pasto. Para las escamas, aumenté la cantidad de amarillo en la mezcla para lograr un contraste con la piel. Las púas dorsales serán de un hermoso color rosa y el área del abdomen un verde-azul oscuro, casi verde marino.

After giving color to the body, I move on to work on the background and, after giving color to the grass on the mound, I realize that I have to vary a little the base tone of the dragon's skin. I continued in the back, giving some pastel green and light carmelite shades to the bushes and trees. Between each tree I created a light-dark effect, giving warm colors on the right and ending in dark colors on the left.
Luego de dar color al cuerpo, paso a trabajar en el fondo y, tras dar color a la hierba del montículo, me doy cuenta de que tengo que variar un poco la tonalidad base de la piel del dragón. Continué en la parte trasera, dándole unas tonalidades de verde pastel y carmelita claro a los arbustos y árboles. Entre cada árbol creé un efecto luz-oscuridad, dando colores cálidos a la derecha y terminando en colores oscuros a la izquierda.

Once I had all the areas of the drawing with their respective base color, I create a new white layer and begin to mark and define the regions of the illumination and shading. I illuminate the entire edge of the left side of the dragon's body and then darken the areas that define the eye socket, the lower part of the chin and the typical shadows cast by the extremities when they make contact with the body.
I also take the opportunity to create the two layers of shadows cast by the body on the grassy mound. And on the mound itself I draw some additional grass plants of a lighter and brighter color than the rest.
Una vez que ya tenía todas las áreas del dibujo con su respectivo color base, creo una nueva capa en blanco y empiezo a marcar y definir las regiones de la iluminación y sombreado. Ilumino todo el borde de la parte izquierda del cuerpo del dragón para luego oscurecer las zonas que definen la cuenca del ojo, la parte baja de la barbilla y las típicas sombras que proyectan las extremidades al hacer contacto con el cuerpo.
Aprovecho también para crear las dos capas de sombras que proyecta el cuerpo sobre el montículo de hierba. Y sobre el propio montículo dibujo algunas plantas de pasto adicional de un color más claro y brillante que el resto.

Now it's the turn of the soft airbrush and the watercolor brush to play with the opacity of each one and work on the dragon's skin to create a relief aspect and add volume. Using these same two brushes, I work over the pink spikes and, creating wavy lines with different shades of pink, I create a leaf effect over each of the spikes.
In the case of the background I will do something similar to what I did with the dragon's body, but at the end I will use the soft blur brush to create a blur effect, which will be barely noticeable due to the low opacity I used on that brush.
Ahora le toca el turno al pincel aerógrafo suave y al de acuarelas para ir jugando con la opacidad de cada uno e ir trabajando sobre la piel del dragón para crear un aspecto de relieve y agregar volumen. Utilizando estos dos mismos pinceles, trabajo encima de las púas rosas y, creando líneas onduladas con diferentes tonos de rosa, creo un efecto hoja sobre cada una de las púas.
En el caso del fondo haré algo parecido a lo que hice con el cuerpo del dragón, pero al final utilizaré el pincel borroso suave para crear un efecto de desenfoque, el cual será a penas perceptible debido a la baja opacidad que utilicé en ese pincel.

Finally, I will do what I usually do with all the drawings. I will export the image in PNG format and after using the remastering tool in my gallery, I will increase the colors of the drawing: 10% in saturation and 15% in contrast. In the end, after a few tweaks, my fan art will look like this.
Para finalizar, haré lo que acostumbro hacer con cada dibujo. Exportaré la imagen en formato PNG y tras utilizar la herramienta de remasterizado de mi galería, le subiré los colores al dibujo: un 10% en saturación y un 15% en contraste. Al final, luego de unos retoques, quedaría así mi fan art.

Si tenemos en cuenta la forma corta del cuerpo, sí, pero en su momento se me hizo un lío en la cabeza para escoger a uno de los dos. Gracias por comentar.
