I figured out that there are like in several other similar series, different elements. Today I am going to talk about the creation of a water trainer. As always, feel free to give feedback in the comments so I can improve my process! :D
The process
I started first making a sketch of a jacket for the character, the design of this is a youthful design, inspired a bit by Kaiba from Yu-gi-oh. Then I proceeded to apply the lineart, trying to make it as similar as possible to the base character.
Then I started to apply the color on the jacket. First I applied a base color to define the boundaries where I would place the colors, then I assembled a color palette based on shades similar to those of the reference character and then applied them on the jacket in separate layers.
Then I started working on the shadows and illuminations. At this point I had to follow very closely the reference image to be able to "copy" the original type and style of coloring, trying to understand it and making it as similar as possible so that everything looks as similar as possible.
Once I finished my jacket I proceeded to add other modifications to the character. I started by eliminating the crown and lines of the shirt that the character had and opted to change the color of the hair, making it much darker. I also changed the color tone of his eyes and added a small beard on the chin of the character. Finally cut one of his eyebrows to cause a different expression in the look of the character. As a final detail I made a small blue background with a spiral shape to introduce Ocean Male.
Feel free to give me advice! :)
