Someone asked me recently "just out of curiosity how much money would you need to make to quit your job and play a game full time?"

Introduction

Crypto gaming has been a thing everywhere in the world for a while now and many more games are being created everyday. Games that you play to earn (p2E) are everywhere and it's a serious trend. In Africa, unemployment and poverty is a challenge and blockchain gaming provides an opportunity to change that. In Nigeria, despite the increase in minimum wage, many still struggle to put food on the table due to the fall of naira. The value of the local currency is a dilemma Nigerians face. Africa as a whole has looked up to earning in Crypto or Usd as a solution to survive - this put blockchain gaming as a solution, However the big question is if Crypto gaming is the next big thing or another passing trend?

Why Crypto Gaming Speaks to the Minds of Africans!

As I mentioned earlier, it's a very positive thing if it's here to stay because many Africans see Crypto gaming as an alternative source of income, or some might even quit their jobs to play games all day. Due to a lack of job opportunities, Games allowing players to earn Crypto which can be exchanged to their local currencies is or would be seen as a saving grace to an already crashing economy.

Another reason is because of the way Crypto gaming works. Many Africans including myself rely on the banks for money or Crypto to cash transactions through p2p on a daily basis. Crypto gaming understand this allowing players to participate without their traditional bank account. Also crypto gaming allows players to use their mobile phones as opposed to games like FIFA and Nba2k and most traditional gaming that requires consoles, expensive PC's and all to play.

Popular Crypto Games In Africa

Gods Unchained was one game I never really understood but a lot of people talked about it. It still trades at about $0.16. It also still played but I know fully well that it wasn't entirely play to earn. The game allows you to earn nfts and trade them to Crypto. It really never went mainstream in africa.

One of the games that was very popular especially in my country Nigeria and our neighbors Ghana was Axie Infinity, I wished I played it, I heard people made up to $400 per month or even more playing the game in 2021. When I actually decided to learn it, it was already a boom and dust project, in the sense that the cost of entry was high and there was very little to benefit from playing the game. Many Africans abandoned the game and even if it is still played till today, I doubt it holds the same appeal as before.

Another crypto popular game was Sand Box and Decentraland, it's a game that allows users to bug digital lands, build assets and trade Nft's.... This game was announced by a Nigerian influencers in 2021 during the Metaverse boom, but as with ethereum based projects, it was difficult for africans to buy land as it was very expensive.

Conclusion

Tomorrow, I'd post another blog highlighting the major challenges and explain what I think the future holds for Crypto gaming in Africa.
