Branded Bodies: The Dark Legacy of Tattoos in Slavery and Their Reclamation

Tattoos and slavery have been connected for a long period throughout history people in ancient days used to Mark people with tattoos as property nowadays some people use tattoos as a symbol or an identity in the body or sometimes to look attractive during ancient times tattoos were used to control slave people and control them for survival and cultural Pride.

During the ancient period when slavery was at its peak, people used tattoos where often to control them and mark them as a number of individuals by the king of that time for example in ancient rooms slaves were branded with tattoos on the hand or the forehead or in thornback to identify themselves as a slave.

Early 18th or 19th century in America tattoo was a permanent mark on a human body to enslave them to show ownership over them they had very little freedom or human rights and it was very difficult to escape from the slave at that time it was not just a physical mark on their body its all so use to show the ownership that they belong to someone.

When tattoos were used to enslave people some of the people used them as a symbol or an identity of their operation being part of such brutal operations and making a cultural heritage people also migrated from Africa to America with the symbols of tattoos from their homeland sometimes tattoo was also used to the symbol of their homeland such as the sign of the ancestors so that they can easily identify from where they belong.

Tattoos were also used to represent their connection to certain groups of their community and in society, for the different types of works the same kind of tattoo leads to a larger group of society where the brutal operations are higher sometimes it can also so that the larger network of and sleep peoples lead to more empowerment in the society sometimes tattoo was intentionally made by the enslaved people to escape from such brutality of slavery sometimes they also use a network like underground railroads to escape towards freedom.

After some time when slavery was ended, tattoos continued to be used for a new identity and a victory towards freedom and it is also used to celebrate to gain control of their body foreign example tattoos were also manually made after freedom they got on their body they started creating some spiritual symbols like angels or ancient gods on their body so that they would never suffer again from this brutality live where descendants to get tattoos that should their pride in their heritage symbol of strength that slavery could not define them or control their future.

In the history of the after some tattoos became afraid or a fashion in society they started making new tattoos to reclaim the body and their freedom and it started becoming more popular in the 20th century to show an identity and connect to the new culture. It also became a way to challenge the racism and negative mindset that people started facing in America tattoo on the bodies of people started to express their freedom and individuality over time in that period.

So finally we can conclude that tattoos and slavery a powerful tool in African and American peoples and their cultures because once upon a while some to enslaved as a mark and control over them by some people as a mean of survival while some enslaved people had tattoos to show their hard time as a slave and continue as an identity of their cultural heritage after such a hard time nowadays tattoos continue to play an important role in Africa and American culture as it shows tthyself-empowermentafter enclave by some people it shows the relation to slavery is a strength of the humans period in the art to reclaim your identity in the society.
