It is about understanding that giving them more space than they deserve in our day is self-sabotaging ourselves. If they have been harmful to us it is best to understand that we may have allowed them to hurt us.
This reminds me of something I once heard that I think it's very pertinent to our relationships with other people; "You teach people how to treat you." Which we certainly do when we allow them to continue to hurt us without giving them consequences.
