Hello, Hivers and film lovers! Today, I’d like to share this post as part of my participation in the second edition of the "Films That Inspire""Grave of the Fireflies", "Hotaru no Haka" in Japan., and with this, I invite @wendy23 to join this exciting initiative. I want to talk about an animation gem that I remember:
Se estrenó en el año 1988 y fue dirigida por Isao Takahata. Primera película que haría junto al Studio Ghibli y, a su vez, tercera producción de este último, tomando como base la novela homónima escrita por Akiyuki Nosaka del mismo nombre. El film narra la historia de Seita y su hermanita Setsuko en la lucha y por sobrevivir durante los meses posteriores al bombardeo de Kōbe el 5 de junio de 1945.
Released in 1988 and directed by Isao Takahata, this was his first film with Studio Ghibli and the studio’s third production overall. It is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. The film tells the heartbreaking story of Seita and his little sister Setsuko as they struggle to survive in the months following the bombing of Kōbe on June 5, 1945, during the final stages of World War II.
Para un yo de apenas ocho años, esta película fue la que me enseñó que la animación era capaz de contar historias capaces de tocar temas más profundos, serios y dejar de lado la comedia infantil. Dos niños en pleno Japón durante la guerra siendo testigos del deterioro humano es un tema bastante complicado de llevar a una historia, mucho más si el mensaje a dar es la pérdida de la inocencia a una edad tan temprana. Recuerdo que la primera vez que la vi casi me dieron ganas de llorar... el metraje es capaz de evocar sentimientos de empatía y tristeza en el espectador mientras hacer reflexionar sobre si realmente vale la pena el conflicto por ideales que afectan a los civiles. Con una duración de 1h y 29m la obra se toma su momento para desarrollar y envolver con su trama a todo el que la vea.
For an eight-year-old me, this film was the one that taught me that animation could tell stories capable of addressing deeper, more serious themes, stepping away from childish comedy. Portraying two children in wartime Japan witnessing humanity’s deterioration is a profoundly complex topic to adapt into a narrative, especially when conveying a message about the loss of innocence at such a young age. I remember the first time I watched it, I nearly cried… The film masterfully evokes empathy and sorrow in the viewer while prompting reflection on whether conflicts rooted in ideals—ones that harm civilians—are truly worth the cost. With a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes, the story takes its time to unfold, drawing viewers into its plot and leaving a lasting impact on anyone who watches.

No resulta sorprendente, entonces, descubrir que la película fue muy aclamada por la crítica y considerada junto a "La Lista de Schindler" de Steven Spielberg y "El Pianista" de Roman Polanski como una de las cintas más antibélicas en la historia del cine. Estas obras trascienden la simple narración, ofreciendo críticas viscerales a la capacidad humana para la destrucción mientras humanizan el daño colateral de los conflictos. Lo que las une es su negativa a sanitizar los horrores de la guerra; en su lugar, sumergen al espectador en el costo psicológico que recae sobre los individuos, desde la narrativa incómoda del Holocausto de Spielberg hasta la inquietante representación de Polanski sobre la supervivencia bajo la ocupación nazi. Cabe destacar la genialidad con la que estas películas cuentan sus historias, abordando con delicadeza temas complejos como la muerte, el dolor y la desesperación. It is not surprising, then, to discover that the film was highly acclaimed by critics and considered alongside "Schindler's List" by Steven Spielberg and "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski as one of the most anti-war films in the history of cinema. These works transcend mere storytelling, offering visceral critiques of humanity’s capacity for destruction while humanizing the collateral damage of conflict. What unites them is their refusal to sanitize war’s horrors—instead, they immerse audiences in the psychological toll on individuals, from Spielberg’s unflinching Holocaust narrative to Polanski’s haunting portrayal of survival under Nazi occupation. It is worth noting the brilliance with which these films tell their stories, delicately addressing complicated themes such as death, pain, and despair. Their power lies in subtle details: the hollow eyes of starving children, the silence after bombings, or the trembling hands of those clinging to fleeting hope. By avoiding sensationalism, they force viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about sacrifice, resilience, and the absurdity of glorifying violence, a timeless message that resonates even decades after their release.
Honestamente, Studio Ghibli es mi favorito en lo que animación refiere, las historias que cuenta en las mismas... y es en muy gran medida por "La Tumba de las Luciérnagas" pues marcó un antes y un después en mi forma de pensar. En un mundo donde los jóvenes de hoy suben contenido a redes sociales hablando sobre la vida tan "difícil" que llevan deja bastante al pensamiento cuando lo contrastamos con una realidad cruda que pudo ser la de cualquiera, y como prueba de esto tenemos al propio Akiyuki Nosaka pues se basa en sus propias vivencias durante la guerra.
Honestly, Studio Ghibli is my favorite when it comes to animation, especially because of the stories their films tell... This is largely thanks to "Grave of the Fireflies", as it marked a turning point in my perspective. In a world where today’s youth post content on social media complaining about their "difficult" lives, it’s striking to contrast that with the raw reality depicted in the film, one that could have been anyone’s. Akiyuki Nosaka, whose own wartime experiences inspired the story, stands as proof of this truth.
Me gustaría hablar un poco más sobre esta obra de arte, pero hacerlo me sería imposible sin hacerles spoiler, y por ello les hago una invitación para que la vean si aún no lo han hecho y para los que ya lo hicieron... repetir una producción así nunca viene mal de vez en cuando.
