Run For Your Life!

in Visual Shots10 days ago

Don't know about y'all, but if I ever go for a ten mile run it'll be because somebody's after me. Obviously, there's plenty of folks that don't see things that way and I think most of them went for a run in my neck of the woods this morning.

They even had Southern Parkway shut down for miles, the Louisville 10 Mile they called it, the final leg of 'Louisville Triple Crown of Running' that the local newspaper seems to have come up with.

My partner had a friend running in it, and it's not often you can go walking without worrying about stray traffic, so we had to set alarms and wander down. I'd never been to anything like this before, if you don't count cursing them profusely as you try to find a way to work that isn't cut off by the race route.

Welcome to Iroquois Park! Feller there just wanted to know if I'd gotten his good side. The race looped through the park before heading back down Southern whence it came.

Was pleasantly surprised, most of the runners seemed to enjoy the fact I was pointing a camera at them, judging by the amount of hamming it up.

Usually with street photography there's always a certain element of tension and uncertainty, but that was absent this morning. Maybe it's just them morning people types.

This, along with the 5k and 10k that preceded it are kind of the warm up for the Derby mini and full marathons, which are in turn warm ups for a horse race. Nobody takes wagers on anything but the horse race though.

Ran cross-country for three years in school, and hated every mile of it. Still not sure how people actually enjoy running, but I enjoying taking photos of them doing it.

Is it just me, or did the king of England slip across the pond and go for a run?

Does anyone know if mushrooms count as performance-enhancing drugs?

Think I must have scared them somehow, they all ran away. Until next year.

As I get ready for summer and regard what months of relative inactivity have done to my body, I feel so much better about myself after looking at these pictures. The runners, many of them, are dramatically out of shape and yet they cheerfully go forth and work on their fitness.

So here I go. Spring is here. Time for the outdoors and whatever physical challenge I can manage in the fresh air.

Great pictures. Great race. Kudos to all the runners.

I may have referred to it as a race but it was really just a run, was such a fun and lighthearted atmosphere. They had pace runners (3rd photo), so everyone got to choose a pace they were comfortable with and enjoy doing it with others. I really had no expectations going in but it was nice to see, made for a fun shoot.

Spring is here! So glad of it too. May the outdoors be with you! I'm keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't get cut short by smoke season.

When I lived in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, I remember hating the disruption caused by the Iron Man triathlon. I never understood why anyone would want to do that, but it sure was popular based on the entrant numbers, crowds, and traffic complications.

Oh hell, can't imagine what the Ironman does to a city that size, it's obnoxious enough here. I've never managed to live in a part of this city that isn't disrupted by the various races, pretty sure the ones enjoying them are not from the areas disrupted.

When it comes to disruption though, it's the horse race that takes the cake. The Kentucky Derby basically shuts this town down, if you're not going to the track or a party you pretty much do everything you can to stay home.

It seems everyone is enjoying the race and striking their best poses for the camera. The man in the black flannel is smiling; he must be happy about his participation.

He was definitely having a good time, but that seemed the case for most everybody.

Usually with street photography there's always a certain element of tension and uncertainty, but that was absent this morning.

It's different when it comes to sports events. You're capturing a piece of history, a historical moment in their lives and everyone is happy. You won't meet any resistance at these events, at least the chances are sling to none.

Great shots!

Ahh, that would explain it. I'm mostly around for the historical moments that are of the unhappy variety, tend to be heavier on the guns and glares. Was a quite pleasant change of pace, may have to go to more sporting events.

Thank you!
