A few days ago, a family member asked me for a minimum of 5 photos to decorate his small office, which he is remodeling.
Días atrás, un familiar me pidió un mínimo de 5 fotografías para ambientar su pequeña oficina, la cual está remodelando.
The thing is that I am usually reluctant to do this kind of work. But being a family member, I decided to help him a little bit and put aside my a little bit and put aside my own opinions... So I proceeded to ask what he wanted for his office.
El caso es que por lo general, yo soy reacio a hacer este tipo de trabajos. Pero tratándose de un familiar, decidí ayudarlo un poco y dejar a un lado mis pareceres... Así que procedí a preguntar que cosa quería para su oficina.
The assignment turned out to be not very simple, as it had very specific specifications:
- 5 photos, in 1x1 (Square) format.
- All of the same subject or better yet, the same location.
- All in black and white, preferably with grain and moderate contrast. (I imagine he saw something similar somewhere).
- Additionally, make a combined assembly of the 5 photos also for printing.
La encomienda resultó no ser muy simple, pues tenía especificaciones bastante puntuales:
- 5 fotos, en formato 1x1 (Cuadrado)
- Todas de un mismo tema o mejor aún, una misma locación.
- Todas en blanco y negro, de preferencia con grano y contraste comedido. (Imagino que él vio algo similar en alguna parte)
- Adicionalmente, hacer un ensamble combinado de las 5 fotos también para imprimir.
I swear I was about to send him to hell when I read the message on Whatsapp!... But I decided to restrain myself! :-)
¡Juro que estuve a punto de enviarlo al demonio cuando leí el mensaje en Whatsapp!... ¡Pero decidí contenerme!
So I prepared the photos on the condition that he would take care of the printing and mounting himself.... I hate doing those things!... (Processing prints, fetching them, checking them, mounting them on boards or frames, that's really irritating for me.)
Así que preparé las fotos a condición de que él mismo se encargase de la impresión y montaje... ¡Odio hacer esas cosas!... (Tramitar impresiones, ir a buscarlas, revisarlas, montarlas en tablillas o marcos, eso es verdaderamente irritante para mi.)
I chose five photos then, all belonging to an old abandoned grocery store here in town. All these photos were already processed in color and without cropping of any kind. But "I'm a damned fanatic with purist manias when it comes to black and white".... So I decided to look for the RAWs and start everything from scratch.
Escogí cinco fotos entonces, todas pertenecientes un viejo abasto abandonado, aquí en el pueblo. Todas estas fotos ya las tenía procesadas en colores y sin recorte de ningún tipo. Pero "Yo soy un condenado fanático con manías puristas cuando se trata de blanco y negro"... Así que decidí buscar los RAWs y comenzar todo desde cero.
I have to confess that I had fun doing this.... First I processed the RAW files as if they were intended for color images, then in the same RAW editor I went to grayscale and graduated the brightness of each color from there. Also editing in RAW, I proceeded to adjust the luminance, contrast, gamma, etc... curves. With this I achieved very "orthodox" and remarkably clean Black and White photos.
He de confesar que me divertí haciendo esto... Primero procesé los archivos RAW como si fuesen destinados a lograr imágenes en color, entonces en el mismo editor RAW pasé a escala de grises y gradué la luminosidad de cada color desde allí. También editando en RAW, procedí a ajustar las curvas de luminancia, contraste, gamma, etc... Con esto logré unas fotos de Blanco y Negro muy "ortodoxo" y notablemente limpias.
NOTE: This is the damned "assembly" of photos... Is it really called this way, or is it just an invention of my relative?
NOTA: Este es el condenado "ensamble" de fotos... ¿Realmente se llama así, o es solo un invento de mi familiar?
Finally, processing the JPGs, I went through a process of attenuation with 1% of a yellow tone (to reduce the contrast and achieve that finish similar to the old Black and White, which I like so much) and finally, I added texture with a noise filter at 20 or 25% depending on how it looked better.
Finalmente, procesando los JPG, les pasé por un proceso de atenuación con un 1% de un tono amarillo (para aminorar el contraste y lograr ese acabado similar al Blanco y Negro antiguo, que tanto me agrada) Y para finalizar, le agregué textura con filtro de ruido a un 20 o 25% dependiendo de como luciese mejor.
