The Call of the Wild

Most of the winter season is not that great for being outdoors because it’s wet, cold, and snowy. Even a small slip up could turn into a big problem in those conditions, plus there’s the risk of hypothermia, frostbite, etc. On the other hand, the bears are hibernating at this time, so it’s less likely you're going to encounter one while trekking through their foraging and hunting grounds. Now that hiking season has arrived, I'm getting psyched about what lies on the trails ahead.

One particular skill I want to keep practicing is wayfinding with a paper map and compass. With all the technology now available, the skills necessary to read and utilize paper maps during navigation have fallen by the wayside. It’s difficult to imagine being in a situation where you would need to navigate without a phone. There is also a wide range of satellite devices available in the outdoor electronics market. But as every good boy or girl scout knows, always be prepared.

It looks like a storm tore through here.

For protection against other species, I carry bear spray, bear bangers, fog horn, and a host of other deterrent or self-defense mechanisms. These methods may or may not be useful against bears, depending on how committed the animal is in choosing violence that day. Cats are another matter. Cougars are sneaky and could just wait patiently for a hiker to go by and then pounce on his or her neck. You'd better know a few judo moves to get it off of you quickly and have the presence of mind to activate self-defense mode. Wolves hunt in packs with vicious efficiency and running away without good means of escape is unwise, so I'll let you imagine how that fight would go if I ever come across a hungry pack. The chances that I will win a brawl against any of these creatures is small but zero if I'm not prepared.

By and large, mosquitoes aren't a major problem health-wise in this coastal rainforest of BC, though they're annoying as heck. We don't have many deadly snakes or creatures- besides the ones previously mentioned- that could ruin your day. Maybe a moose could crash your party during mating season, but you would be very unlucky indeed to find a horny moose blocking your path.

This path was really cool when I was there. The trees stand aside in a row like giant sentinels, reminding me of the ents in Lord of the Rings. I felt as if I was on a fantasy quest.

I think the place is wonderful and magical but it is true that you should take things with you to protect yourself! I fell in love with this image!
