— ¿Quiénes son? —preguntó el más joven mientras observaba los cuerpos andrajosos que eran arrastrados por el suelo de la muralla.
—Son los malditos, las criaturas del otro lado de los muros, siempre intentan entrar, aunque últimamente lo hacen con más desesperación que de costumbre. —contestó el más viejo, quien llevaba mucho tiempo vigilando el límite de su ciudad y conocía muy bien a las criaturas del otro lado.
—¿Por qué vienen? ¿Qué quieren de nosotros? —el más pequeño miró los agujeros en la piel de los invasores. Había media docena de ellos y los estaban apilando en una plataforma.
—Porque necesitan nuestra agua.
—¿Agua? ¿Por qué? —dijo el de baja estatura y observó cómo se llevaban los cuerpos chorreando carmesí.
—Los malditos necesitan agua para existir, también necesitan comida, oxígeno, sexo. Por eso se les llama malditos, ¿lo entiendes?
—Who are they? —asked the younger one as he watched the ragged bodies being dragged along the floor of the wall.

—Siempre nos han acechado, desde el principio están ahí e intentan entrar; al menos eso dicen mis informes. Son como una plaga, no paran de multiplicarse y lo hacen prácticamente sin coste alguno. La tierra casi sucumbió bajo su dominio.
—¿Alguna vez los malditos dominaron el mundo? —se detuvo el más bajo. Le parecieron demasiado frágiles e indefensos, demasiado blandos. El más robusto de los asaltantes no era rival para el más pequeño de los suyos.
—Sí —respondió el grande sin hacer pausa en su andar.
—¿Qué es el sexo? —se apresuró a indagar el bajito y alcanzó a su compañero.
—Es algo que hacen los seres vivos para poder multiplicarse, aunque los malditos lo hacen a veces por placer. Nosotros, las máquinas, no necesitamos eso.
—I understand, —the shorter of the two paused and asked again—, where did they come from?
—They've always been stalking us, they've been there from the beginning and trying to get in; at least that's what my reports say. They are like a plague, they keep multiplying and they do it at practically no cost. The earth almost succumbed under their dominion.
—Did the damned ever rule the world? —the shorter one paused. They seemed to him too frail and helpless, too soft. The stoutest of the assailants was no match for the smallest of his own.
—Yes —answered the big one without pausing in his gait.
—What is sex? —The short one hastened to inquire and caught up with his companion.
—It's something that living beings do to be able to multiply, although the damned sometimes do it for pleasure. We machines don't need that.
