¿El día de San Valentín es de los enamorados o de la amistad? ¿Qué tiene que ver un santo con esa fecha? ¿Existió un solo San Valentín o fueron varios? Esas son algunas de las interrogantes que generan estas fechas.
Mucha antes de la celebración eclesiástica de ese santo, había una fiesta pagana para rendir homenaje a la fertilidad, la cual no era bien vista por la naciente religión cristiana. La Lupercalia la cual se celebraba a mediados de febrero, que es la época en que empieza el apareamiento de las aves.
Pero hay una historia hermosa sobre un Valentín que era sacerdote entre las tropas romanas, en la cual estaba prohibido casarse, por orden del emperador Claudio, quien consideraba que esto debilitaría a los guerreros. Pues, este Valentín, quien consideraba que el matrimonio era un mandato de Dios, empezó a unir en matrimonio a los soldados, pero en secreto. Esta historia se desarrolla por allá en el siglo III.

Es durante el renacimiento que un escrito frances, Geoffrey Chaucer, vincula la fecha y al santo con el amor. A partir de allí se comienzan a combinar en canciones, poemas y más, la fecha con la celebración del amor.
El resto del proceso es bien sabido. Una vez se populariza la manufactura y es posible fabricar regalos en serie, viene la estrategia de popularizar la fecha para "vender".
Una de las empresas que contribuyó enormemente a esa tarea fue la americana Hallmark. En el video te cuento la historia con más detalle.
Lo cierto es que hay sitios donde siempre se ha celebrado el Día del Amor y la Amistad, y otros donde era el Día de los Enamorados. Pero eso ha ido cambiando.
