There's a lot of excitement brewing about the upcoming Chaos Legion presale, but what if you don't plan on participating? Whether you lack the SPS to get vouchers, or it just isn't in your budget, you may be buying few, if any Chaos Legions packs. But that doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the fun—you can earn Chaos Legion packs just for playing the game!
In case you missed it when the new reward cards were added to loot chests a few weeks ago, it was also announced that "a 1% of chance of receiving a Chaos Legion pack will also be added in (in place of 1% chance of receiving a potion) when the Chaos Legion set is released." So just by completing your daily quests and claiming your season end rewards, you have the chance to earn Chaos Legion packs. But how many should you expect?
(Note: This post was written before the recent announcement that rewards for players below Silver league would be adjusted downwards. While there was no mention of pack drops anywhere in that post, I suspect that those will also be reduced or removed for players below Silver league. However, in the absence of any official confirmation, I am publishing this post as originally written.)
The Numbers
With a 1% drop rate, one would expect to earn about one Chaos Legion pack per 100 loot chests opened. How long does it take to earn 100 loot chests? Well, that varies depending on what league you are in. In my current league of Gold III, I earn 6 loot chests per day from my daily quest, and 22 loot chests from my end of season rewards. Splinterlands seasons officially last 12-16 days, but we'll say they're 15 days long on average, because that's around what I've observed and it's a nice number if we want to work with an idealized 30 day month. That means that if I stay in Gold III for an entire season, I will earn 15 × 6 + 22 = 112 reward chests per season, so I can expect to earn around a pack per season. In a month, I would earn 224 loot chests, and average about 2.24 Chaos Legion packs. Keep in mind that this is the number for staying in one league all month, which does not really happen in normal play. But it's a good estimate of what's possible for Gold III players.
What about other leagues? Here's a nice table carrying out the same calculations for all the other leagues:
League | Daily Chests | Season Chests | Chests Per Month | Average Packs Per Month | About 1 pack every n days |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Novice | 1 | 0 | 30 | 0.3 | 100 |
Bronze III | 1 | 5 | 40 | 0.4 | 75 |
Bronze II | 1 | 7 | 44 | 0.44 | 68 |
Bronze I | 1 | 9 | 48 | 0.48 | 63 |
Silver III | 2 | 12 | 84 | 0.84 | 35 |
Silver II | 3 | 15 | 120 | 1.2 | 25 |
Silver I | 4 | 18 | 156 | 1.56 | 19 |
Gold III | 6 | 22 | 224 | 2.24 | 13 |
Gold II | 7 | 26 | 262 | 2.62 | 11 |
Gold I | 8 | 30 | 300 | 3 | 10 |
Diamond III | 10 | 40 | 380 | 3.8 | 8 |
Diamond II | 12 | 50 | 460 | 4.6 | 7 |
Diamond I | 14 | 60 | 540 | 5.4 | 6 |
Champion III | 16 | 80 | 640 | 6.4 | 5 |
Champion II | 18 | 120 | 780 | 7.8 | 4 |
Champion I | 20 | 150 | 900 | 9 | 3 |
Now those numbers might seem small to someone who plans on buying a thousand packs in the presale, but they look a lot bigger to those of us who won't be able to buy quite so many. Packs will probably take a while if you're stuck in Novice league (though you could always get lucky and pull one from your very first chest), but the numbers grow rapidly as you climb from league to league. A little extra incentive to advance, perhaps?
Also, bear in mind that there are plans to keep the voucher system in place for some (indeterminate, as far as I know) time after the presale is over. And that's a very good thing, because I believe that Chaos Legion packs will sell out extremely quickly as soon as they remove the brakes. None of the numbers up above would matter much if the pack supply was depleted after only a couple days. Ideally the voucher system will remain in place for several months so you can expect to keep earning your free packs for a while after release, but we'll have to wait for official word on that.
Hopefully this information will get those of you who had little interest in the presale a bit more excited about the upcoming Chaos Legion release. And maybe having all the numbers in front of you will even encourage you to start climbing up into higher leagues to increase your earnings. Whatever you plan, good luck in your future Splinterlands journey!

Haven't even started playing Splinterlands yet? You must have been pretty bored to read this whole post about a game you've never played. Instead of just reading about Splinterlands, why don't you follow this link and try the game out for yourself?

Great write up, I noticed they didn't mention packs in that post either.
I was thinking bronze will have it removed as they wanna push people to get to silver.
Thanks. I also think they'll be removed from bronze, but I hope that I'm wrong. You earn packs so slowly in the lower leagues that it really shouldn't have a great impact on the economy, and it's got to be one of the best feelings in the game to have a pack drop. Keep it in as a motivator, I say.

Lots of excitement about Chaos Legion packs and you nicely explained the stats. Good work.
