To Rent or not to Rent, that is the Question...

...Whether 'tis nobler in the mind... Oh! Hello everyone. Well, I set myself a goal of writing a post every day. I don't think it will be long before I run out of things to say LOL. I wanted to explain my strategy for renting out cards. I actually got the idea from a video by one of the excellent podcasters/streamers who provide a steady flow of quality content and information on Youtube. I spent an hour trying to find the video so I could give the guy credit. Couldn't find it so far. If I manage to find it I'll add a comment to that effect.

So - why renting cards out, and not playing? As I said before, I'm not very good at playing. This kind of strategy game doesn't fit my mindset too well. I don't enjoy playing chess for the same reason. I do play from time to time, and enjoy it for a while, but the enjoyment soon wears off, and I actually get much better rewards from renting out cards. I did build up a pretty formidable water/magic team, which can be quite devastating, in combination with taunt/triage. (Note to self: write an article about taunt/triage.) But it's a source of frustration because the rulesets seldom allow me to deploy it. I know there are many anti-magic strategies now, but still, when I'm able to deploy my team, it wins more often than it loses.

Here's my renting strategy in a nutshell: buy cards that have the best COST/CP ratio, max them out and rent them out. That is to say, the cards that give the most collection power at the cheapest price. Why is collection power important? Your power rating determines the maximum level you can play at in ranked battles. It's also important for the SPS airdrop. For instance, I have a maxed out, level 10 Pelacor Mercenary. His power rating is 2,100. If I keep the card in my deck, that power rating counts towards my own power level for ranked battle purposes, and also counts towards airdrop points for the SPS airdrop. If I rent the card out, the person who rents the card acquires the power for purposes of his own ranked battle level, but it still counts towards my airdrop points. (The airdrop has a few months to run, it's an important factor in the game.) (That's why rental prices can be dramatically hiked up towards the end of a season. Players want to rent cards with high power to push up their own ranked battle level so they get more end of season rewards.)

So, now for the nitty gritty. I go to Peakmonsters.com and click on the 'buy' menu option at the top. Under 'Compare by' select 'BEST COST/CP RATIO'. As you can see in the screenshot, the card with the best COST/CP ratio at the time of making this article is Gargoya Devil. Gargoya Devil is a rare neutral card and requires 115 cards to be maxed out. If I have enough dec or credits available, I'll go to MonsterMarket.io and buy 115 Gargoya Devils. Why MonsterMarket.io? When you buy from the Splinterlands Market they charge a transaction fee on the price. MonsterMarket gives you 3% or 5% cashback from the transaction fee. If you're buying hundreds of cards, this adds up to a substantial saving. I'll write a separate article explaining MonsterMarket. I don't find their interface especially intuitive.

There is an added advantage to maxing out these low-value cards. Rare cards require 115 cards to be merged into one maxed-out card. With common cards it's 400. When you merge cards like this, it reduces the overall number of cards in circulation. It's deflationary and can potentially increase the market value of the cards.

All comments are welcome, whether you agree, disagree, think I left something out, or whatever...
