Current Staking Status

Questions was: Are we top heavy as a DAO?

Here is the data as of today:

Total Staked SPS in circulation: 770,279,561.144 in 309,024 accounts.

Percentage Owned by:
Top 10: 125,410,743.365 Staked SPS (16.28%)
Top 50: 249,194,082.242 Staked SPS (32.35%)
Top 100: 315,892,844.1 Staked SPS (41.01%)
Top 200: 394,989,324.521 Staked SPS (51.28%)

This is the comment from cryptoeater that triggered me into looking up the numbers at the Splinterlands Rich List:

I have said this multiple times but we have one of the most distributed DAOs I've ever seen, even large DAOs like pancakeswap (from memory) has a guy with like 10%+ voting power, my fav is Alpaca finance which has someone with around 40% voting power, and not everyone votes so they often have over 50% of the actual vote

I have google sheet that I keep that can be used to track the top 200 stakeholders. I don't do this often. Last time I did this was Nov 04, 2023 before today. As per todays, May 18,2024 number, out of total staked SPS (about 770 million), 51.28% is held by top 200 accounts. Back in Nov 04, 2023, out of total staked SPS back then (about 707 million), 48.54% was held by top 200 accounts. So the change is about 2.7% over the last 7 months.

What changed?

Well, not much have changed in my opinion, but if you look at the data there are some interesting patterns we can see in the top 20.

  • gosplinterland5 is missing, this person sold is stake, community is well aware
  • vugtis and cryptoeater both doubled their respective stake (approximately, crytoeater nearly 3X)
  • couple of new accounts in the top 20
  • few others like myself, and Dave (queenofmonsters) kept their position relatively stable

But top 10 used to control 12.3% back then towards the end of last year, now top 10 controls 16.3%. This is a 4% change, which is slightly higher that the top 200 change over the same time period.

Why this matters?

Well one of the complaints that we often hear that 'whales' (large stakeholders) can pass any DAO proposals. I disagree. If we consider that not all accounts vote; based on the past 20 passed proposal, I can say, that it typically takes 150 million to 175 million votes to pass a well contested proposal.

  • Top 10 stakeholders currently hold 117 million staked SPS
  • Top 20 stakeholders currently hold 173 million staked SPS

So in theory top 20 stakeholders can technically pass a proposal, but since not all of them vote, and I have never seen them vote the same way ever (which is great), the concern is moot.

Sort:

This is actually very interesting. I thought the whales had more voting pull than that. Seeing how much the vote percentage move when a top player votes shows how much regular players aren't voting.

Yes, people often go by perception as opposed to study the facts :)

Thanks for the update! I was always under the assumption my vote didn't matter too much, but I can see now that even my small 150K SPS probably does make a difference.

absolutely it does make a difference

For anyone complaining that whales get to make all the calls well my answer to them is you can go out and buy SPS, earn SPS and swap for SPS with a price point of just over a penny and really pull some weight yourself so stop complaining and take action. Most of these people have invested heavily into the game.

I'm going to be honest I really thought I was in the top 200 but I'm below it now. That's actully kind of crazy as my goal was 1 million SPS now that seems like a small task lol

1 Million is easy these days, that will get you spot number 112 today.

I still feel like a small fish compared to top 10 stakeholders, anyway i keep staking and playing ranked games, thanks for share!

Nothing wrong with that.

Seeing the Top 10 grow another 4% is expected due to the nature of staking rewards, but nonetheless concerning. Proof of Stake centralizes over time and this seems to be the case here. My hope is that if the team is effective at marketing the game in the future we can bring that number down again as many players try to attain a Top 10 status.

Full agreement there. Such is life. Since our community is small I know the stake is bought in the last 7 months

While you don't post often, when you do, it is always interesting data.

It is supposed to be that way. Quality over quantity.

I don't have; i don't talk. Anyone who feels things are not what I wants can go ahead and stake more to have a hand in decision making also😃😊
just my opinion, please

Your opinion is similar to mine

Are you feeling alone again? Did you miss me? 😘

The only thing that I hope, that you are not getting aroused by your lovely visits. That would be improper, as I like girls.

I feel like hiding my face because this is a scenario where who stakes what and who holds what speak. But I take a challenge. I will set out and add bit by bit maybe someday, I'll get to the top class too. 😂

Please, I sincerely appreciate those mentioned in this analysis with respect to their staking. I appreciate you all. These must be those who make this blockchain to have a solid base. I hope that in days to come, I also will have accumulated a reasonable stake.

I love this analysis on the blockchain token holders.
It is a pleasure to read informative article about my favorite game Splinterlands
Peace
