Hive Holding of Splinterlands Players 2.0
post.I have been interested in seeing the Hive HP distribution among Splinterlands players for a while. However, I can only get top 200 staked SPS holders from public sources. Thanks to @yabapmatt I got top 1000 SPS stakeholder list! I appreciate Matt taking his time among his busy schedule to do this for me. I am also thankful to @slobberchops for adding the HP column by doing a Hive SQL and Python Magic perhaps (please ask him for details). Thanks to both of them, I have a simple spreadsheet, which I can plot in a variety of different ways to look at the data. This will be a major upgrade and improvement from my previous
I will start with a humbling plot! Hive HP along X-axis as a linear scale; and Staked SPS of Top 1000 SPS stakeholder along Y-axis as a log scale.
Boy! That is a lot of empty space! If any one of you were wondering why it was so hard to get SL DHF proposal funded, and why it is still hard to keep it funded, I hope you can see the answer. I am simply thankful to all hive stakeholders who doesn't play the game and yet supported the proposal!
Within the top 1000 SPS holders, there are only five accounts with more than 500K Hive Staked (HP). Remember, to vote for a DHF proposal it is the staked hive or HP that counts.
There is always a silver lining though. Now I can see the sps.dao account standing there with 1M HP. That is the latest proud addition to show the support of the Splinterlands community to Hive Ecosystem.
How are Top 1000 SPS distributed?
This can be understood from this simple plot below. I am plotting Staked Rank of Accounts along the X-axis in linear scale, vs. Staked SPS held in each account in log scale along the Y-axis. Each blue bar represent one account. The red line is the proportional cumulative fraction of each account compared to sum of 1000 account's stake SPS (698,455,189 M SPS as of now). We know the current total staked SPS is about 887,902,872. So top 1000 represent about 78.6% of total staked SPS.
I highlighted the Median of this distribution with a cyan square, which is 1.6M SPS. There are 69 accounts that stake more SPS than that number, and 931 accounts that stake less than that. So, yeah, it is a fairly skewed distribution.
- Max = 41.9M (vugtis)
- Min = 122,913 (hope-on-fire)
- Mean = 698,455
- Median = 1.606M
Zoom into the SPS vs HP space
Obviously the first plot with a linear X-axis doesn't do any justice to this kind of data, so we have to spread it out by plotting it on a log scale. This shows the real picture of the HP holding of Splinterlands players. P50 of the HP distribution falls between Rank 4, Yabapmatt and Rank 5 Neoxian. So 4 accounts holds higher HP than that and 995 accounts hold HP lower than that! It is an incredibly skewed distribution.
Here is the other fact, since we are using log scale, it is difficult to plot HP lower than 1. 182 accounts hold ZERO HP. Yes, it is possible today with RC delegation.
In fact:
- 84 accounts hold HP >10,000 Hive
- 215 accounts hold HP >1000 Hive
- 505 accounts hold HP >100 Hive
- 731 accounts hold HP >10 Hive
- 817 accounts hold HP >1 Hive
That is another way of looking at it. I do not like anyone to get frustrated by it. I see this as an opportunity. Those 495 accounts that hold less than 100 hive. They can easily double their holding by spending only $16.50. That is a lunch for one person in Houston, TX these days. I understand that is still a lot of money at different corners of the world. However, here is the most positive thing I will mention for hive:

Yes, that is 1.8 Million Dollars total. These people are not poor. They are investors with a lot of potential.
Also if you are willing to move the bar to 10,000 hive, so 785 accounts that hold less than 10K hive, you can tap essentially all SPS whales like Vugtis, Cryptoeater, Bravetofu, Cryptomancer, and the rest! I think this is where I should stop.
Your posts motivate me. Now I am among 505 accounts. Next week I will increase my HP by 2 times. And this fall I will enter the top 200.

Man, the data visualization here is spot-on... Clearly I'm massively overweight on SPS versus Hive. Part of my problem though is that, while I really do like Hive, my highest conviction bet related to Hive is Splinterlands! That's why I prefer to put money into SPS than Hive. I've started being more active again on Hive though and plan to get up to at least 10,000 HP. Thanks for the motivation Azircon.
That is fine Brave. It is our job to give you incentives to invest in hive.
Higher HP from you will keep DHF funded :) that is protecting your own investment
Your content creation will stay on a firmer footing
You can curate other accounts and get a 10% return on your curation
Hive is near historic low, it could be a speculative play during the recovery
Appreciate you continuing to visualize all this data and sharing your findings.
Still aiming for 10k HP before EOY - just may very well hit 500k SPS in that same time frame.

I'm sorry, I didn't quite follow you here. Which 495 accounts are you talking about? In your data, there is 731 accounts that hold more than 10 Hive and less than 100 Hive.
You're right that $16 isn't much in the US... but it also is really hard to buy Hive in the US.
I think an important conversation here is why would big SPS holders divert their funds to establish Hive Power? Do you know if the Splinterlands company intends to do regular DHF requests?
Yeah, sorry, in a cumulative frequency distribution every single bin includes all the previous bins.
So 817 accounts that hold > 1 hive, also includes all 713 accounts that holds >10 hive. So on, and so forth.
Regarding the big holder buying hive, they will if we show the the opportunity. We will give them incentive.

I think it is important to be aware that gaming and blogging are very different exercises... someone who enjoys one activity may not enjoy the other. To be fair, for me personally, I'd probably blog a lot more if I wasn't spending time each day playing Splinterlands.

I hope to reach 10k HP by the end of the year. But if I would buy crypto now it would probably be HBD and not HP. I can never have enough HP but at the moment I have much more HP than HBD. And that 15.00% APR seems very tempting.
Nothing wrong in buying HBD. That helps the ecosystem the same way.

I am at 2,500+ Hive and 357k staked SPS so I am in top 300 SPS players as far as Hive power. I am working on increasing my Hive power to 10k by the end of the year. Saw your latest video with After Sound it is good that you are educating him on HIVE and even delegated him 10k HP hopefully he does some Hive content.
Aftersound is an excellent content creator. I appreciate the community service he has done over the last three years, day-in and day-out. We fortunate to have him.
I know enough users who have a separate account for Splinterlands (or games, in general) and for posting/staking on Hive. I believe the HP holdings of SPL investors/players look a little better if that is taken into consideration. Obviously, not good enough to pass a DHF proposal without help, it appears.
Yes, there is multiple accounts, but that effect in terms of hive holding is minimal
Well, we are not talking whale size, but at a quick passing of a few situations I can think of from memory we are talking about hundreds of thousands HP.

I recently joined the hive comunity and i don't get everything about all the utilities of HP. It gets me more and more interested and im about to buy and stake 500 hive to start my journey :) (along with my SL assets)

Hive and SPL being in the same ecosystem shows how most of the SPL whales just placed the majority of their funds in SPL. I guess there wasn't much incentive for them to do so if they don't blog. Hopefully, you sharing this info and the SPL DHF proposal needing more votes help convince them to invest a little in Hive.
Things are changing rapidly and by 'things' I mean people's perception. It is important to understand that we are in this together.
I have 17000 HP staked and 25000 SPS staked. I am actually powering down and slowly starting to sell my monsters. I do this because Splinterlands are making it more and more difficult to play and earn. I have a nice set of cards, but for the Wild part of the game. Now I must pay 2000 DEC to play. Further on renting cards out became more difficult, previously you could just rent out once and they stay available for renting, now it lapses and one need to re rent it out over and over, at a cost. Then there is Soulbound cards, that cost more to unbound than what they are worth. Why do we need glint, we could just earn DEC and pay for cards??? As you say this should be an investment, but these issues just make it a bad investment.
It is just be coming more and more frustrating to play Splinterlands.
