Hey Splinterheads, I hope you are all having a great Splinterday!
The Battle Mage Secrets Challenge is a wonderful and effective way to get to know rulesets better and improve your gameplay. Not only do you study and analyse rulesets and example battles closely, you also get to read and see what other Splinterheads are thinking and doing with their little darlings on the battlefield.
With many battles now being comprised of 3 rulesets, it is important to know your rulesets well, how they relate to other rulesets and what corresponding cards work well to either exploit the ruleset or defend against it. We have also seen a number of new rulesets coming into the game lately and a bunch of new monsters have received new abilities.
The game is becoming more and more technical, leaving you with ever decreasing chances of winning battles with sheer brute force and overkill strategies. All these reasons and the clear challenge that players (and bots unfortunately) are getting „smarter“ all the time underscore the need to know rulesets very well. The Battle Mage Secrets Challenge helps and motivates us players further to do just that.
Today's ruleset in focus is Fog of War.
RULESET: Fog of War
Description:
All units lose the Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity abilities.
Scattershot still works in this ruleset.
I Love the Fog of War ruleset. It means I don’t have to worry about stealth attack and load my midfield and backline. The only issue is Scattershot, but as there are not many monsters around with such abilily, I can take a gamble on it. Of course, I need to look out for Conqueror Jacek and on the other hand, he is my preferred strategies in Fog of War. This ruleset allows me to use monsters, that are otherwise susceptible and exposed. I can think of a number of powerful rangers with low health, who can clean up the opposing team in two or three rounds. My favourites candidates there are both from the purple team: Vampire and Soulstorm. As basically everything will be directed at your frontline tank, it is also wise to field a monter with high health and Shield.
The battle I have chosen to look at closely today has the Fog of War and Close Range rulesets with a mana cap of 29. The available splinters are Fire and Death.
Here is the team I put together:
So with the fire deck available, my obvious choice for a Fog of War ruleset is Conqueror Jacek, ahead of considering the monsters who are best suited. Scattershot, Piercing and plus 2 speed, make him unbeatable in this situation. His abilities do all the damage but the extra speed, when added to monsters who already have good stats, is absolutely lethal.
I have chosen to place Living Lava at the front, as he will take most of the fire from the opposition. His Shield ability will fend off some of the damage and add 3 meelee attack himself. He is slow but solid as a rock for two or three rounds.
As we have the Close Range ruleset, I dont mind lining up loads of rangers from the second position onwards. Scavo Firebolt is fast and will take at least two hits.
Here comes my first of two secret weapons for this battle: Pyromancer. He will add Blast to Scattershot, making him an absolute force to contend with.
Here are the big guns in position 4: Fire Elemental, also with Blast but faster. She will fire first with a total of six speed. If her Scattershot is placed well, she can win the battle single-handedly.
Chaos Agent is in last position, admittedly placed in the wrong position. He should have gone to position 2 to buffer the ranger trio. Fortunately, this blunder will not affect the success of the strategy and the overall team selected.
Round 1 began with sheer speed and great Scattershot placements from Fire Elemental and Pyromancer to get rid of Weirding Warrior and seriously injure Gem Meteor. Scavo Firebolt then took a direct shot at the Riftwing and the rest of the round went to the opposition.
The second round began in a similar fashion with Fire Elemental dishing out another Scattershot with Blast to the opposing midfield. Pyromancer wiped out Venari Bonesmith, while Living Lava reduced Cursed Windeku to one health.
Fire Elemental took Scavo Technomancer in a foul sweep and Scavo Firebolt collected Gem Meteor. The battle was won already, leaving only the Riftwing at the beginning of Round 4 to be taken out with two quick shots.
Fire Elemental did an exceptional job in this battle with sheer speed and well placed Scattershots loaded with deadly Blast. This is one of my favourite monsters from the fire deck and the optimal weapon in a Fog of War ruleset.
This was an easy fight. I would have liked to go with the death splinter and use my super rangers Vampire and Soulstorm, but I though I needed to make sure, hence Jacek. Fog of War means attacking the frontline opponent as hard as possible with speed and offensive power. As Stealth fighters are ineffective with their aim, Scattershot should be considered as the next best thing to decimate the midfield and backlines, as the opposition tank will sure be tough to knock out. This is kinda an insurance policy.
See you around Splinterheads!
