Building your collection

Building your collection

In Splinterlands, players must build a collection of cards from the different sets available. This collection is crucial to forming teams that can adapt to the various battle rules and conditions of the game. When building your collection, it is important to keep in mind the distinction between Modern and Wild formats.

  • Modern format: Only allows cards from the most recent editions, so it is ideal for players who prefer a more controlled environment and where older cards are not allowed.

  • Wild format: Includes all available cards, allowing for greater flexibility, but can also be more competitive due to the power of older cards.

Each player should analyze which format best suits their play style and focus their collection based on the cards available in each format. It is advisable to review the sets and editions to have a complete overview of the cards the game offers.

Starter Cards

All new players in Splinterlands start with a basic set of starter cards. These cards include all common and rare cards from the two most recent editions, currently Chaos Legion and Rebellion.

  • Starter Card Limitations: While these cards can be used in battle, they do have certain restrictions. They do not generate rewards in matches, and cannot be transferred or sold to other players.

  • Identification: Starter cards are easily identified by a blue flag with an "S" in the upper right corner, and are usually more transparent than purchased or rented cards.

In order to earn rewards and build a more competitive deck, players can choose to rent or purchase these starter cards, which removes the restriction and makes the card part of their playable collection.

Booster Pack and Single Card Purchases

To enhance their card collection, players have several purchasing options within Splinterlands:

  • Booster Packs: Players can purchase Booster Packs from the Rebellion set using Credits or Dark Energy Crystals (DEC), and obtain random cards. Each Booster Pack guarantees at least one rare or higher value card.

  • Bulk Purchase Bonus: By purchasing Booster Packs in large quantities, players receive additional packs as a bonus. Purchases of 100, 500, or 2000 packs grant 5%, 10%, or 15% more packs respectively.

  • Vouchers: When purchasing packs in bulk, players can use Vouchers to reduce the cost of purchases. These Vouchers can be obtained by staking SPS tokens or purchased from player marketplaces such as TribalDex.

  • Individual Cards: Players can also purchase specific cards directly from the Player Market using DEC or Credits. This peer-to-peer market allows players to purchase exactly the cards they need to enhance their game strategy.

Card Rental

Splinterlands' rental system is a great option for those who don't want to invest large amounts of resources into purchasing cards, but want to temporarily enhance their collection.

  • Advantages of Rental: By renting cards, players can try out different combinations and high-value cards without committing to buying them. These rented cards also count toward Collection Power and earn rewards in matches.

  • Limitations of Rental: Rented cards cannot be combined, sold, or transferred, but players can use them in battle as if they were part of their permanent collection. This is a great option for new players who only have starter cards and want to try out more powerful cards without buying them.

Importance of Summoners

In Splinterlands, summoners are key to being able to deploy your units in battle. Each summoner has a power level that determines which cards can be summoned. While it is tempting to upgrade your unit cards, it is crucial to upgrade your summoners first.

  • Summoner and Unit Leveling: If unit cards are of a higher level than the summoner allows, they will be limited to the maximum level the summoner can handle. Therefore, it is recommended that players first level up their summoners before upgrading their unit cards.

  • Summoner Types: There are three types of summoners in the game:

  • Standard Summoners: Allows you to play with a single element.

  • Dual Element Summoners: Introduced in the Rebellion set, these allow you to play with two elements simultaneously.

  • Tactical Summoners: Also from the Rebellion set, these offer an additional tactical stage.

    Forming a Battle Team

The battle mechanics in Splinterlands are based on team formation. Players select a summoner and units within the available mana limit. The team formation process follows these steps:

Selecting Battle Format: Players choose between Modern or Wild format. In Modern, only cards from the most recent editions are allowed, while in Wild, all available cards are allowed.

Summoner Choice: Depending on the selected summoner, players will be able to choose units of certain elements. The summoner will determine which units can be used in battle.

Unit Choice: Players choose the cards from their collection that they want to use in battle, keeping within the mana limit indicated for each battle. Units can be arranged in any desired order to maximize their effectiveness.

Battle Watching

Once card selection has been completed, the battle begins automatically. Players can watch the battle in real-time or review the results later. While it is not mandatory to watch the battle, it is highly recommended to do so as it offers a valuable opportunity to learn and improve combat strategies.

  • Battle Details: The battle unfolds automatically once both sides have submitted their teams. Players can adjust the speed of the battle or even jump straight to the result if they prefer.

  • Battle Replay: Battles in Splinterlands are recorded on the blockchain, so they can be watched as many times as the player wishes. This allows for studying the opponent's tactics and optimizing strategies for future battles.
