BATTLE LINK -- December 25, 2024 -- Day 360 of 366 vs. @vugtis

Today's special Christmas Day and Hanukkah Night battle comes from Wild Champion League using XBot, since I did not have time on the holiday to jam battles of my own. So I spent a few minutes flipping through my Christmas battles until I came across this beautiful lineup against my guildmate and Splinterlands Vonarch @vugtis.

The 28-mana battle had three rulesets: What Doesn't Kill You, Armored Up, and Maneuvers. Only two elements were excluded: fire and life. I think the battles are interesting to examine when different elements and summoners are used. Vugtis opted for a big magic approach using Lorkus to power up his death lineup, leveraging Skok to weapons train Grim Smith and the Botanist. He threw two 0-mana monsters in the back, including the Corpse Fiend that silenced my team.

My featured card of the battle is the Alpha/Beta rare water summoner, Alric Stormbringer. For those who don't recognize Alric's art in the thumbnail, it is the Splinterstorm art from the original alternate skin release for Alpha/Beta cards. Although Alric's magic bonus was canceled out by the Corpse Fiend's silence, it still gave my team construction a clear and simple goal to bring as much magic attack as possible.

I've never tried a lineup like this, with magic weapon trainers in 2nd and 5th position. This enabled me to run null attack monsters in the other four monster slots and they would all receive a magic attack. Moxian Rebel's 2-magic attack paired with Baakjira and Surveyor up front and Daarg Deadblast paired with Merdaali Guardian and Kelp Initiate in the back for 3-magic attack. All four of the null attack monsters brought important complementary abilities to the battle.

My monsters provided me with a 3-speed advantage with two slows and a swiftness ability, and Baakjira's void ability as tank did strong defensive work against the magic attack from Vugtis. Another big feature of the null attack monsters in water is their natural high-speed stats. The combination of Guardian's tank heal and Kelp's cleanse meant that my tank's health would stay safe from poison and affliction.

My magic attack was too much for Grim Smith and easily overpowered the popular tank before the Arachne Weaver could use its heal ability. Ultimately, Vugtis' attack barely made a dent in Baakjira's health and I finished the battle with my full team intact. It's not every day that I get to take down one of the best accounts in the game, so consider this a Christmas miracle!
