BATTLE LINK -- December 26, 2024 -- Day 361 of 366 vs. @bubke

Since I spent my free time yesterday engaged in tournament battles, here is a fun one from the Drybone GF Wild Gold Invitational that highlights how the small details have a huge impact in mirror matches. This Day 2 battle pitted me against @bubke who finished in 3rd place one win ahead of me. My 15-6 record was good for an 8th place and a juicy 1891 SPS payday.

The 57-mana battle had three rulesets: Are You Not Entertained, Super Sneak, and Heavy Metal. Fire and death were the two elements excluded, so Bubke and I both ended up on a very similar dragon lineup with the life Gladiator, Helmet Kharafax, given double weapon training to go with his Bloodlust.

The featured card of the battle is the Chaos Legion legendary Desert Dragon because it made the difference in the win. We both started the same monsters in the second, third, and fourth positions, and my opponent didn't play a single melee monster in the sneak attack battle. They likely planned to avoid Tofu's thorns altogether, since life and earth were both available.

Bubke didn't really leverage the triage from Lily or Forester since all my attack was directed at the tank by Lily's camouflage ability. My play of Akane allowed me to land important early attacks on Grim Smith to clear the powerful tank in Round 1 before he could hit my Ulundin Overseer. I opted for Grim Smith in 5th position rather than tank so it could hold down the back line in case my opponent opted for a heavy melee attack.

Desert Dragon gets retaliate at Gold League (Level 3), so I thought it would be a punishing monster to put in the rear and potentially hit with a devastating counter-attack and trample. With Bubke opting for Lily instead of Tofu, Desert Dragon had free reign to slam the tank for 5 trampling melee attack and was never under threat since there were no sneak monsters from the opponent.

Helmet still ended up with four kills in the battle (including Rage and their Helmet), but Desert Dragon did a lot of heavy lifting by softening up those tanks before Helmet did the business. Despite the solo strength of Isgald Vorst and Katrelba Gobson, Helmet Kharafax now holds the top of my list of common Gladiators ever since the weapon training rework. Looks like Bubke agrees!
