BATTLE LINK -- January 19, 2025 -- Day 19 of 365 vs. @jedielf
My favorite event of the week is back, the @sps.dao Mount Mox Modern Diamond Invitational Gold Foil tournament, with the best prizes of the season! Today's Day 1 battle pits me against @jedielf, a friendly KoG rival in our other guild, Guardians of Glory.
The 30-mana battle had three rulesets: Back to Basics, Holy Protection, and Earthquake. Only half of the elements were available for selection: Fire, Water, and Earth. Back to Basics (B2B) and Earthquake make for an interesting combination of rules, because all the monsters with flying lose that ability from B2B and take earthquake damage. One way to mitigate the earthquake damage is to select Kelya for her extra armor like JediElf did.
Or you can select the featured card of the battle, the dual-element Rebellion legendary summoner, Risqruel Drath. Drath gave everyone on my team flying to avoid the two damage from Earthquake and allowed me access to both Fire and Earth elements for battle, doubling the pool of cards I had available to choose from.
In asynchronous tournament settings, Drath's taunt tactic isn't as powerful since it's used with incomplete information. And I might have even made a mistake trying to use it on my opponent's lineup since I randomly chose the 5th monster and it gave a redemption trigger that cleared all my divine shields. But at least I had very little reason to fear that my opponent would use Tofu, whose snare ability counters the flying from Drath in the Earthquake battle.
I did go a bit overboard selecting range monsters in my lineup to take advantage of Drath's +1 range bonus. Although my three ranged choices had high speed and big attacks, they can't attack from the front position and lose value later in the battle. I did make sure to pick the fastest lineup I could in B2B, but I sacrificed by having slightly lower health totals than my opponent.
I was very lucky that my monsters had the flying ability from Drath, because they needed every last bit of health to outlast the onslaught from my opponent. JediElf's Water team was fast on the attack too, and the Shock Trooper is all gas without the debilitation to slow it down in B2B battles. That pesky magic attacker kept one-shotting my monsters right out of the air.
Luckily, I was able to outlast JediElf. His Shock Trooper killed my second-to-last monster in Round 5, bringing my last range monster up to the front, unable to attack. But the two damage from Earthquake took its toll on my opponent's lineup since none of the monsters had flying. Shock Trooper was a couple of turns too late dealing those last points of damage and died from the unrelenting earthquake. Risqruel Drath did the business and let my team fly to victory.

Once again with the blind taunt, and this time even blowing up all your divine shields. you are such a madman! Imagine if you taunted the Thanalorian Scion instead - disaster!
Yes I got very lucky. I wasn't sure what would happen if I picked the 6th position but they only had 5 monsters. I didn't want to miss using the ability, so I figured 5th was safer than 6th.
