BATTLE LINK -- January 22, 2025 -- Day 22 of 365 vs. @lorkus
Here we go with the granddaddy of them all, the Gloridax Wild Diamond Invitational Gold Foil tournament, and a Day 1 matchup against the summoner himself -- @Lorkus. The 29-mana battle had three rulesets: Healed Out, Weak MAgic, and Rise of the Commons. The only element excluded was Dragon, so this battle was screaming for a dual-element summoner.
Lorkus brought a beefy shielded lineup in the void armor battle, enabling Commander Slade with the flanking ability of Silverblade Fighter as the tank. Lorkus added one armor plus the two protect bonuses meant five extra armor to bring the front two up to 12 armor. Slade can be lethal with Elias' armor strike tactic, swinging for 12 + 5 damage with elite speed.
But today's featured card, the common Untamed Death reward, Nightmare, is even faster than Slade. Nightmare brings 7 speed at Level 10 and the benefit of phase to evade magic attacks, too. Blast is a bonus to the allure of pure speed, but with Slade's reflection shield, it was mostly blanked.
I piled onto my speed play with two Beta commons hiding in the back to slow down my opponent, Creeping Ooze and Goblin Shaman. My summoner wasn't much help playing the speed game, but I couldn't turn down the opportunity to play Lorkus against Lorkus! After the slows were factored in, all five of my attackers were faster than even my opponent's Slade.
Death's two rare Chaos Legion magic attackers both come standard with life leech, so I gave the tactic to the two Untamed cards instead. Since they were the two fastest monsters on my team, that extra life would make them even more durable.
But the extra health wouldn't matter much if Slade landed that initial armor strike in Round 1. Luckily, he whiffed, and with Lorkus' attack buffs, my speedy threats tore through the Fighter and into Slade's armor shield before its attack in Round 2.
Once again, my team's speed prevailed against my opponent's extra armor defenses. Slade missed his armor attack again in Round 2. Even sweeter, I got to beat Lorkus with his own summoner. It never gets old!
