BATTLE LINK -- January 27, 2025 -- Day 27 of 365 vs. @langice
Once again, back to the Modern grind on my way to Champion League 2. Today's 57-mana battle had three rulesets: Odd Ones Out, Aimless, and Unprotected. Only three elements could be selected: Life, Earth, and Death. With Life and Earth both available, the battle was screaming out for us to use Eternal Tofu, and we both obliged.
My opponent added a triage monster, Djinn Renova, to help heal his backline in the scattershot battle, but opted to use Tofu's divine shield tactic instead of a second triage ability. They also brought Adelaide for her resurrect trigger and wisely put Grimbardun Fighter as the tank with its reflection shield to neutralize thorns damage. Their lineup definitely made a bit more sense than mine, but I had a new monster to try out.
Today's featured card is the Rebellion auction promo legendary, Heloise The Hollow. This was my very first battle trying her out in ranked play and the battle rules seemed favorable. Heloise certainly has some weaknesses, like its slow speed and lack of piercing. Just a single armor will blank its 8-power melee attack, but this was an Unprotected battle, so nobody had armor to worry about.
Another advantage for Heloise was the scattershot rule since it ignores Heloise's taunt ability. I figured that Heloise would be able to last longer and deal more damage if it wasn't taunting all of my opponent's attacks. On the flip side, Heloise has opportunity, which supersedes scattershot and allows her to attack the opponent's weakest monster.
The battle played out chaotically, which is to be expected when most of the monsters are attacking randomly. Both teams also included the martyr monster Fungus Flinger, making matters even more random with its blind ability. My team definitely benefitted from having a second triage ability, but I think I should have placed my Uloth Dhampir behind Iziar to preserve its triage a bit longer.
In the end, Helosie did a ton of work dealing damage and taking out the opposing monsters. But the battle ended in a showdown between our Runemancer Florre. Although mine had more health and increased attack power, it also had the weary debilitation from Heloise (another one of her deadly drawbacks). Luckily for me, my Florre only missed a few rounds from being weary and finally dealt the winning blow before her health ran out.
That battle was quite a nailbiter and proved to me how much more there is to learn about battle strategy with Heloise. Ultimately, she served her purpose well with opportunity attacks in the scattershot battle, but those weary debilitations from her soul siphon ability nearly cost me the match.

Heloise seems to be double edged sword to use. Adds some element of uncertainty and fun to the game though.

Yes I wasn't sure how it was going to play out since it was my first time. I think she is a dominant card in the right rulesets, but can't be used all the time.
